Because just a little bit of success can springboard you to a good job somewhere. That's the only reason I can think of.

Most coordinators want to be head coaches. Sometimes they want to be head coaches so bad, that they take shitty jobs.

I dunno. Terrible program, terrible school, terrible neighborhood.

McElwain isn't getting any younger. He'll be 50 next year. I guess he figured now or never, if he does indeed take the job.

He likes their color of Blue?
The cheerleaders are easy?
Nick Saban isn't there?
He will be a big fish in a small pond of scum?
He loves Mud Island?
He really likes Beale St Muffaletta's?

McElwain
The USM and Houston jobs will likely be or are already open. I would rather have one of those if I'm McElwain.

It's simple really bmemphis had 5000 fans at their last 2 home games and won 3 games over the last 2 years. Porter could only do one thing well he could recruit so mcelwain is really walking into a potential no lose situation fan interest cannot get worse and the young talent that Porter brought in has gotten some playing time and will only get better the conference and schedule is ridiculously easy. Basically he can win 6 to 8 games easily next year and have 40k fans in the seats. Then his agent can sell his client somewhere else for more money because he will look like a football genius and marketing genius
