"Among" the leading candidates.

I am "among" the best football players on the planet. I'm at the very very bottom end, but yet I'm still among them.

Dude is about to get paid 1.95mm/yr to be a DC at Bama until Saban retires.

Yeah the only reason he would leave on a lateral hire is if he really hates working under Saban. He turned down his alma mater a few yrs ago.

Smart wants to be a HC eventually, LSU may propel him to that. Saban is a defensive minded coach so he is kinda limited with jumping to a HC job. Miles isn't defensive minded, if we had a really good D under Smart he would probably go take a HC job somewhere. If Miles retires in a few years he would easily step into the LSU job.

Seriously, if Smart moves to LSU, he will be named coach in waiting and Miles departure will be sooner than later just like everyone wants

I don't have a problem with this.

Here's my opinion on hiring Smart as the DC (if they do it). It's one you will probably not see anywhere else on the board so take it for what it's worth:

I have absolutely no fricken' idea if hiring Kirby Smart as the DC is an incredible hire, a terrible hire or somewhere in between. Same goes for pretty much all the names that have been floated around.

First thing in the morning Saban will walk into Kirby's office and tell him to get on the phone and start locking down recruits.

That will be the end of any talks with LSU

Because Kirby will not start recruiting against himself while still at Bama, and he doesnt have the guts to tell a man thats carried him for 10 years that he wont lock down his recruits.

He gets on the phone to the best players in America, and brings them to Bama, and his agent parlays his loyalty into a pay raise
