Sacramento State football coach Troy Taylor has accepted an offer to become the next head coach at Stanford. Taylor told The Sacramento Bee he is taking the job after three seasons with the Hornets. He was planning to inform his Sac State players Saturday morning before meeting with Cardinal players and personnel on the Stanford campus. Taylor transformed the Sac State football program during his time with the Hornets. Now, he’s headed to the Pac-12 Conference to take on the challenge of rebuilding the Cardinal.

Taylor, a Cordova High School and Cal graduate, led the Hornets to three consecutive Big Sky Conference championships, a 30-8 overall record, an FCS national No. 2 ranking and a 12-0 showing entering Friday’s game. Along the way, Taylor was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year three times for his impact, including offensive schemes that led to school records and FCS national prominence.

Not a sexy hire by any means but a lot better than some of the names that were floated out there. Taking the Harbaugh approach of a successful lower tier CA coach.

That actually isn’t a terrible hire

In the NIL/Portal era Stanford is a terrible job.

They are even worse for transfers than Colorado is.

Even their seniors with eligibility left have to leave because they can't get in grad school there.

There was only 1 transfer on the entire Stanford roster this past season and he was a walk-on.

I know nothing about Troy Taylor, so I have no opinion of him. I thought a proven developmental coach like Willie Fritz would work there, and Stanford is loaded so I'm sure they could've gotten him.

Reading Taylor's history, he's from the area and played at Cal, but Stanford has to recruit nationwide, so not sure how a local guy benefits them.

Strange hire.

Decent hire, program builder. No one wants to move to California, get a local guy who does not know anything else. All he has to do is win 4 or 5 games a year and he has a lifetime job. Those cats don't GIF about football.

Bro, he's been a head coach for three seasons. He may do great, but under no interpretation of the word can you call him a program builder.

I’m not surprised they went with an offensive coach. Stanford is gonna be a tough job moving forward.

Have no idea about him so you have no opinion, except for the fact you think it’s a strange hire. Ok

I don't know anything about his coaching abilities. I was just looking at were he's from, etc.

Generally schools that hire "the local guy" are doing it to capitalize on the local recruits and relationships with area coaches. Since academics force Stanford to recruit nationally, those local contacts don't seem valuable.

Stanford may be the most challenging job in the P5 moving forward. I just thought they would get a bigger name.

So you admit they are the most challenging job moving forward but are surprised with a hire like this? I mean what?

It's a hard job. But Stanford is still fricking loaded. They have money to overcome that barrier if they chose.

Stanford has money but they would rather spend it on obscure Title IX sports so they can 3-peat in Women’s Water Polo instead of investing in the football program

He was a below average OC for Whittingham at Utah. I was glad to see him move on. Stanford should have hired Bronco Mendenhall IMO. He's a proven winner at tough academic places.

My comment was tongue in cheek directed at all the posters here for the last week posting absolutes that Deion will be a failure and there’s no argument against it.

See above. I’m not 100% guaranteeing the guys success. I just have a problem with multiple posters stances that he will 100% be a failure. You have your opinion as well, but a lot of them stem from you disliking his style, IMO. It’s different and that’s ok, but it doesn’t mean he’s an automatic failure.

This guy being hired by Stanford and Sanders beingg hired by Colorado is no different as far as experience goes. The only difference is the way they carry themselves.
