I believe Saban is the only one to do it at multiple schools

We could match 7.5 million easy. Not sure I'd want to give him a ten year contract though.

you would be better off letting the little a-hole walk and promoting kirby smart as HC.

We have the money. Obviously Texas has endlessly deep pockets, but what are they really going to offer him? Ten million? We could do ten million. The athletic program is a huge money maker these days. If they wanted to go to something that's just beyond absurd, ok. But I'm not sure I'd want to promote Smart.

For all the talk about Saban leaving, I worry as much about a Bowden situation. But that's a ways off regardless.

I've thought for years that Saban would be interested in going to Penn State. This gets him closer to home and out of the daily grind of SEC football. But, for all the arguing about who is better, Texas is MUCH bigger than ANY other program from a money standpoint. It is stated that Alabama "can" afford $10mil / year but that's an easy statement to make if you're not the one cutting the checks and balancing the checkbook. I would bet that Finus Gaston would beg to differ. That said, Texas makes several times that amount each year off of the oil wells it owns (donated by alumni). Alabama "may" be able to afford that price but it's pocket change for Texas.

that's the university endowment, not the Athletic Department endowment.

Sorry I didn't clarify that - understood. But, my point is still valid. Texas has tremendous resources. Alabama (or any other school) would not fair well in a bidding war with Texas.

No its really not. do you really think they would tap into the univeristy endowment to (over) pay for a coach?

You guys need to learn the difference between theory and the real world. In theory if everyone liquidated their entire university and athletic department assets and the top coach said he would coach whoever offered 1 penny more, then yes, Texas could win a bidding war. But that's not how it works. The coaches salary comes from the AD and while the Texas AD may generated the most revenue, its no so much more that no school can compete with them.

Why not? Its not like Bama would ever fire him barring extreme circumstances.

If he retires, its not like you have to keep paying him.

Not what I said. Simply, Texas (AD) has tremendous resources at its disposal - and its much more than most D1 schools - this I know. But in the end, the entire argument is moot - they have a coach and probably will for the foreseeable future.

you said Texas is much bigger and mention the Oil which is the Univeristy, not AD, endowment, which you agreed with. What, exactly is the point of mentioning the Unveristy endowment when discussing potential coaching salaries if you do think they will use said endowment to pay the coach?

Here is a list of the top revenue producing Atlethic Departments. Its as of the 08/09 school year, but it would not have changed much since then.

1. Texas $138,459,149
2. Ohio State $119,859,607
3. Florida $108,309,060
4. Alabama $103,934,873
5. LSU $100,077,884

yes, Texas is #1, but not so much so that they could just outbid everyone, even if they world worked that way, which it does not.

The Yankees have the largest payroll on MLB, not because they pay guys way more than everyone else, but because they pay more guys big salaries.
