Coach saban on leadership

He explains his secret to success...

He's a lot more than a football coach, and that's why he is the best of all time.

I still think he gets help landing these #1 classes and his players blowing up physically.

great material for anyone in leadership or building a business etc.

Does he say in this speech if he or anyone he knows is leaving for a different job?

I guess his leadership only works at the college level. He wasn’t able to lead professional athletes.

This article about his time in Miami just about summed that up.

Deadspin

quote:

Nick Saban left LSU and took the job as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins on Christmas Day in 2004. The NFL had changed in the decade he’d been away. Free agency, in its infancy during Saban’s time as the defensive coordinator with the Browns, had grown into full maturity. The players were now empowered, and they weren’t afraid to show it. The college game was—and remains today—about the cult of the coach. In the pros, the players now reigned. In the 2005 off-season, Saban discovered quickly—and rudely—just how different things had become.

You guys are being biased idiots if you think Nick can't lead at the highest level anywhere....and do very well

He coached in the NFL for 2 years, hardly a good sample...If he had picked Drew Bress over Culpepper, he'd be winning Super bowls...

He's about to win a 7th national championship...at age 67, 15 years younger than the Bear...

He's the highest paid coach in all of football, including the NFL!

watch the dang video...he's much more than a coach

he has the it factor, you have to respect that...that's all I can say... he understands human tendency and behavior and to work in that reality...he is always talking about the mental part ...

most coaches aren't good enough in this area in terms of changing the "culture of organization"

I have never understood the disdain by some LSU fans towards Coach Saban. I want to kick his arse on the field like everyone else but I do appreciate his contribution along with ME to LSU during their short reign in Baton Rouge. He was more than a coach and that’s why his former players love him regardless of the Crimson colors he know wears.

Same here. It's because of Saban that we have championship standards....or at least we did under Miles. Now the bar seems to have lowered back down to 8-9 wins is cool

Bear won his 6th national title at age 66, and died at age 69

I mean it’s a completely different situation. College athletes are basically moderately skilled employees who make minimum wage, and professional athletes are basically highly skilled independent contractors who make enough money to walk away. Two totally different leadership styles and even a great leader would have a hard time making that big of a switch overnight. That’s like going from running a small apartment complex in Baton Rouge to developing a 100 story tower in New York

Nice try. Bear Bryant died at 69 years of age.

I think the problem some of us have is there is ZERO evidence that Saban is better than average when you take away his talent advantage. Note his 15-17 NFL record, his 15-9 SEC record in his first 3 years at LSU, his 4-4 SEC record his first year at Bama, his 17-14-1 Big Ten record his first four years at Mich St. Once his recruiting pipeline kicked in, he did better at all those stops.

The good thing for Saban (and Bama fans) is he's the GOAT recruiter, so none of this matters now.

Let’s just ignore the fact that evaluating and acquiring talent is a very important part of being a coach in both college and the nfl.

At Lsu, Saban won the SEC and sugar bowl in year 2.

At Alabama, Saban started the year 12-0 in year 2 and was an undefeated national champion in year 3.

Are you really trying to argue that after 1 or 2 recruiting classes at places that finished a combined 9-15 the year before he got there, and therefore playing almost exclusively freshmen and sophomores, Saban had clear talent advantages over every other team in the sec?

When you have to use different metrics at each place to try to make your point, that should be pretty telling.

Well at this point he’s arguably caused more heartache for LSU fans than anything positive he did while he was here.

No doubt. My post was not about evaluating Saban as a coach. It was about evaluating the specific parts of his coaching skill set that come into play when his talent level is not superior to his opponent's.

There's no evidence from the above that Saban has been better than average when he lacks a substantial talent advantage.

You mention 2001 LSU. That team went 5-3 in the SEC, but was not lacking in talent. Ryan Clark, Bradie James, Jarvis Green, Josh Reed, Michael Clayton, and Marcus Spears all had good NFL careers. The SECCG win over Tennessee is a game Saban won with inferior talent, but the home loss to Ole Miss is one he dropped with superior talent.

2008 Bama went 12-2, but look at the guys Saban had by then: Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Terrence Cody, Don'ta Hightower, Rolando McClain, Andre Smith. That team still lost to Florida (similar talent) and Utah (less talent), but did beat a loaded UGA (similar talent) on the road.

One thing 2001 LSU and 2008 Bama had in common: Senior, veteran QBs (Davey, Wilson).

quote:

Are you really trying to argue that after 1 or 2 recruiting classes at places that finished a combined 9-15 the year before he got there, and therefore playing almost exclusively freshmen and sophomores, Saban had clear talent advantages over every other team in the sec?

No. 2001 LSU was pretty talented, but opponents UF and Tenn had more talent that year. 2008 Bama had a talent advantage over everyone but UGA and Florida. That year LSU was equal at some positions, but had lost a lot from the 2007 team and lacked QB experience.

If you'd prefer a consistent criteria, do this:
Take Saban's 1st year conference record at Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama, plus his NFL record. Because we know he lacked a talent advantage in all of those situations.

Add it up, you get 28-27-1.

Great speech!

Everyone needs to listen!

Focus on the "process" and "practices" to accomplish your vision.

I did laugh when he talked about the ULM loss and the gas station clerk. That actually happened to him in 2000 after UAB loss.
