I’ve heard his name mentioned by a few of the radio host as a guy of interest for the DC job. Any validity?

I feel like he probably will eventually get a NFL DC job if he sticks around with the Saints.

He's a very good coach.

May make that jump sooner if he comes here. Similar to the joe Brady experiment.

Not sure why he’d leave the saints. He’s a premier DL coach.

NFL assistants make on average $350,000.
A premier College DC will make $2,000,000.

True but college coaching is a year long grind with recruiting. NFL jobs are long during the season but less time offseason.

I think he would be a great hire. Hopefully we would be able to keep him a few years.

1. We don’t know Nielsen’s salary and 2. LSU isn’t paying him $2 million.

I think he'd be an interesting but somewhat risky hire with a lot of upside. He's unquestionably a great D-line coach, and he's hopefully learned a lot from Dennis Allen while he's been with the Saints. If he would work out as a college defensive coordinator or not, who knows, but for me he would definitely be a good hire.

Absolutely no clue if he's interested in going back to college or not.

Would be an outstanding hire for LSU (but bad for the Saints, if you are also a Saints fan).

Coached under Ed O at Ole Miss, so there's that IN.

Was also the Recruiting coordinator at NC St, so recruiting is not a question.

Was Co-DC at Northern Illinois, so he has some play-calling experience.

In his last year at NC St, he developed 4 DL that went into the first 3 rounds, including Bradley Chubb.

In his first year with the Saints, Cam Jordan coincidently earns his first 1st team All-Pro, then goes 2nd team All-Pro the next two years. Cam earned another Pro Bowl this year.

In Nielsen's almost 4 years, the DL has easily been the most consistent position on defense. Nielsen has unsurprisingly overseen career bests out of Jordan, Okafor, Rankins, Onyemata, Davenport, Granderson, Tuttle and (a possible All-Pro bid in) Trey Hendrickson. This is no coincidence.

$350 is average for an NFL DL coach. If LSU doubled or tripled it, it would be less than the average power 5 DC. There are currently 27 coordinators that make north of a mil per currently in college.

LSU could easily double whatever his salary is

And I don't care how much I love my current situation. If I could get at a minimum 3x my current compensation, I'm having the conversation

I know that. I just don’t think it’s a slam dunk that he’d want to return to college and also DL coaches don’t go the DC route like DB coaches do.

I think it’s more likely he’s an NFL HC sooner than a DC anywhere.

Rumor is he becomes DC and Bo Davis becomes the DL coach. I would feel ok with both moves.

If nothing else our DL would be seriously nasty.

They work long hours between mid July to mid January and don’t have to recruit. Most scouts are developing assessments for possible draft picks to hand out to them for the pro days they go on and then seem like normal hours in the off-season. Def way less of a grind.
