Sounds like Miles went hard getting this guy

"Yeah, there's definitely a difference in pay," Cooper chuckled. "I feel blessed for that to happen. But that's not the important thing. I feel good about their overall situation. I looked at Coach Miles's vision and what he wants done. I'd like to be part of a national championship team. They won it a year ago. I looked at their personnel and players. I think I can definitely help them out in the secondary."
Cooper said he quickly came to an agreement with Miles relating to salary.
"It was all Coach Miles. He offered. I didn't have to make a request," Cooper said. "He told me what everything was. The whole deal sort of shocked me. I thought it was really good."
A year after capturing the national championship, LSU fell to 8-5 this past season, finishing the year with a rout of Georgia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
"It's a real good situation and we're looking forward to it," Cooper said. "I discussed it with my wife and kids and they're excited. It's an opportunity that I just couldn't turn down. I will be at a program that has everything and is headed the right way. I thought it fit my goals that I have for players, my family, and everything involved."

I loved the prospect at landing Joseph, but i didnt even know Cooper was on the radar.
He looks like a college "lifer"...should have more stability than what Joseph would have brought.

My thought as well. Failing as a HC settles you down into what you do best, and makes it more appreciated and creates an opportunity to prove yourself again. The talent that will be available to a good position coach AND getting good money is hard to leave.

someone said earlier Coop was OLB coach during Dunta's last year at SC
True.
First year was 2004-2005 as a OLB coach.
Then promoted to Assistant Head Coach/Secondary coach in 2006 on.

Surpassed only by Mangino of Kansas! I watched a game a few years ago between Maryland and Kansas. I was waiting to see who might have a heart attack first and then at the end, I waited to see if their arms would extend far enough to shake each others' hand at the end of the game. Damn, those guys are freaking huge!

Way to go Les. Sounds like a great hire!

I apologize if this has already been mentioned, but South Carolina has been top 5 in the country in passing yards allowed per game the past two years and I believe was 23rd in Cooper's first year. I know DC Ellis Johnson gets most of that credit, but I think those high rankings are also a testament to the coaching ability of the Cooper.

i echo what les said 100%
and i'll add
even if he was fired for being decisive, it seems that we got tenuta without hiring him as DC
that's win-win to me

Judging from the sheer # of recruits he's been attributed to in the past, you can tell he's a very hard worker on the recruiting trail. That is O's secret as well...while he certainly can BS with the best of them, the main thing is he works hard and stays in constant contact. It appears Cooper does the same thing, so that is nice to see. We needed someone to counter the loss of Peveto on the recruiting trail.
