If I started a program from scratch with no inherent advantages I’d be hard pressed to find someone better than Whittingham.

Some coaches are better at overachieving with marginal talent (or resources). Other coaches are better at not screwing up great talent (or resources). There is a difference.

Now what year was Brian Kelly 8-4 at LSU?
4 loses is 4 losses..

...and he will have 4 at the end of this year.

MAC Kelly - maybe looks like the level of defensive players and coaches that he is bringing to LSU.

Still not a current Top 10 coach. But that’s just one old fart’s opinion.

No, but he’s definitely a top 10 “old school” coach. Sure he’s not bringing you to the promise land, but he will consistently bring winning seasons and potential NY6 bids, that’s fact. Look how long Texas took to recover once he left, look how long it took UNC to recover once he left, it took his return for them to recover.

He is a good coach but anyone with a championship should be over him

We are talking about right now. Not in the near future. No one knows what the future HCs ranking will be like. Kelly will not get LSU to win a championship in the future. Did you know Kentucky had House as their DC? He did a very good job. What happened to House at LSU? Maybe it isn't House that is the problem. Might it be that Kelly is holding him down in some way. Something about Kelly just can't get a championship at Cincinatti, Notre Dame, and now currently at LSU.

Do me a favor and tell me who are the two winningest active football coaches currently and google the answer.

Report back with said answer.

K thanks

Brian Kelly is not in the Top 20, much less number 3.

Spent years at one of the natin's premier programs and never won a damn thing. 8-4 coach at LSU.

Take your delusions of being a powerhouse elsewhere.

Notre Dame isn't a premier program anymore.

They haven't won a major bowl game in 30 years.

Got their head coach poached by LSU and had to settle for a first time head coach that was a year removed from being a DC at Cincinnati.

Second tier program.

Kelly's a Top 5 coach, just my opinion. It would take anyone time to untangle the mess Orgeron left at LSU. And I'm not just talking about the program side of it, Orgeron let the politicians and boosters back in the door.

It took Saban awhile to get them out, and Miles to his credit kept them out (probably why they turned on him as soon as he slipped a little). And then when Ed took over, he turned it all back over to the good ol boy network. That's what hamstrung the program in the past.

Curious, whatever happened to the Iowa State football coach? He was the next big thing a couple years ago, I thought. Matt Campbell. Did he stay there too long?

They are in the running for the Big 12 title game and have a big game against Texas tomorrow.

He did have a couple sub-par seasons, but it’s hard to sustain at a place like that. He’s a great coach and ISU is probably a bottom 5 school in the P5.

He has maybe the top freshman QB in Rocco Becht.
