Stanford assistant Greg Roman and Virginia Tech assistant Bud Foster said they would be willing to listen if contacted about Vanderbilt's football coaching vacancy.
Vanderbilt also has added former Miami (Fla.) Coach Randy Shannon to its list of desirable candidates, a source said.
Shannon was fired Saturday, the same day Robbie Caldwell resigned as Vanderbilt's coach. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Roman, Stanford's associate head coach/assistant head coach of offense, wrote in an email to The Tennessean that he had not heard from Vanderbilt and was busy recruiting and preparing for Stanford's bowl game.
But he added: "I would find it very interesting however, because of my experience bringing another academic institution to the top of the BCS football world. Vandy is very similar to Stanford!"
Foster, Virginia Tech's defensive coordinator, said he hadn't heard from Vanderbilt.
"It's an SEC school, a BCS conference," Foster told reporters in Virginia. "It would be very intriguing from that standpoint if it ever happened.
"That's the toughest job, probably, in the SEC. You see schools like Northwestern and Stanford and programs like that, and I think academic institutions, you can get a good quality kid in there. Tennessee is a tough state to recruit in. I know … we've been there before. And it's in a tough conference."

Vandy has kept this search very, very quiet. Even the players don't have a clue.

I wish someone would hire Bud Foster. He must seriously be a terrible interview. He comes up in Head Coaching searches every damn year and never gets an offer.

I don't think he has ever been interested in a job until recently.

i never understood why foster was such a great candidate
VT doesn't exactly light it up against top non-ACC competition. LSU arse raped them in 2007. BSU beat them this year.
VT gets over-inflated stats from playing in the worst BCS conference the past 5 years and getting into the worst BCS games when they win that shitty conference

VT plays in the ACC. Not the Big East.

the Big East has been better than the ACC over the past 5 years
this year was really bad for the big east, and nobody should argue that, but
2005-2007 had that WV/UL (and sometimes rutgers) domination
then cinci in 2009
the ACC hasn't produced those sorts of teams

I think he's just waiting to take the job over when Frank Beamer retires.

Spoke with someone who said Bowden was going after this job HARD and that he's way up on Vanderbilt's list. Obviously it will depend on how he and others interview, but there's a very good chance he ends up being the head coach there.
