Oakland is preparing to pursue ESPN analyst Jon Gruden with an offer so strong it could even include an ownership stake in the Raiders, according to league sources.
Gruden will be tempted to accept it, according to sources, but would prefer not to make any decisions until the regular season finishes Sunday and the Raiders make a final determination on their current head coach, Jack Del Rio, who signed a contract extension last summer.

I personally don't get the obsession with Gruden. He had a solid run but nothing exceptional to me

Now that's an offer.
Unless he has no desire to coach at all, he has to consider that. Ownership stake is huge.

right, he only beat the oakland team he built in the SB.
your statement is akin to morons on tiger rant saying saban is not some good defensive guru or X and O guy. he can just recruit!

someone explain the Gruden fascination to me.
I mean he had a good run but people/franchises act like he was a 2000s version of Lombardi.

Del Rio is a good coach, they will regret that move.

Contingent on the percentage of ownership, this would be extremely stupid of him to turn down

He's a mediocre coach. He's not really anything special.

Gruden’s agent doing work negotiating through the media
What is really interesting to me is ESPN reporting on rumors about their own employee

One, for Gruden, you have to take this job. A percentage of ownership could be tremendous value. The raiders have a legit young quarterback, a young talented defense (with some holes of course) and a great young WR.
If you’re the Raiders, why not go after Gruden? I like Del Rio, he’s a good guy and a decent coach, but he won’t win a Super Bowl. Just won’t happen. So if you move on, who else is a real solid coaching option? All the great coaches in the NFL aren’t leaving their current positions (belichik, Payton, Tomlin, McCarthy, Carroll). You need a homerun with this important stretch of your franchise QB’s career. Go for the big dawg, what do you have to lose?
However, in no way would I offer a coach a percentage of ownership in the franchise. That’s crazy. When you figure the value of just 1% of the Oakland Raiders, considering a possible future move to Vegas, on top of what will most assuredly be a top 3 salary offer, it is a ludicrous price for a coach.
This will be really interesting. If Gruden takes the offer, it will be extremely entertaining, not to mention it basically sets all coaching compensation records. If he turns that crazy offer down, he won’t ever get back into coaching.

If he sucks how do you fire him if he is also an owner? That would be interesting to watch

He was 95-81 as a HC. That's mediocre.
5-9 vs John Fox

building Oakland is his best selling point
he built Oakland approximately 20 years ago and hasn't coached in 10
the NFL has undergone 2+ full cycles of change since he was fired (B/c he couldn't develop a QB/offense for shite in Tampa)
