Honestly, I don't really care what the current players are saying. What have they ever won of importance? Nothing. I guarantee that if they bring in a coach that leads them to a conference title in the next year or two, they'll be singing a different tune.

They were a 9-3/10-2 team for fricking ever under Osborne until he finally broke through to win it all at the end of his career. They seem to think his 90s teams were the norm.
From 1973-1992 he only had 2 one loss years going 12-1 in 1982 and 1983. He likely lost a national title by going for the win outright instead of tying Miami in the Orange Bowl in 1983.
He was 12-13 overall in bowls and was just 8-13 before winning his last four in a row from 1994-1997.
It was only from 1993-1997 that his teams really dominated going 11-1, 13-0, 12-0, 11-2, 13-0 in succession.

at disneyland last week, sat and talked w/ a big nebraska donor. he said they don't like the pelini attitude of anger and rage.
he said neb never had a coach like pelini, and thought all coaches should be like tom osborn!
i never liked pelini's anger and i was surprised that he was offered the neb job after 07.

Agreed. The admin was sick of his shite. He was so lackadaisical and arrogant that he even dared them to fire him once in a presser.

The difference between Pelini and Osborne is that Osborne won championships. Pelini never won anything. His biggest win was vs. Ohio State after Braxton Miller got knocked out of the game.

Osborne had it a hell of a lot easier in the Big 8 when he only had to worry about OU for the bulk of his career with CU/KSU replacing them in the 90s.

Gotta remember that Osborne was told that if they didn't beat Texas Tech in the bowl game after the 1976 season, that he was gone.
The Huskers won, 27-24.
And in response to your point, who else is really relevant in the Big 10? There's no excuse for Nebraska not to be contending for the league title on a regular basis.

Makes sense. Pelini was a loose cannon for sure. Not a good representative for the school. Reminded me of Billy Gillispie at UK.
With that said, at least Pelini was winning good for Nebraska. 40 games over .500 in 7 seasons should make Nebraska fans forgive him.
Tom Osborne isn't walking thru that door, at least I don't think he is.

Once again, the # of wins is meaningless if there aren't any championships to show for it. Beating the lower tier teams in the conference, and getting blown out on the reg by the top-tier teams, just ain't gonna cut it.
Pelini's biggest problem is that he hired all of his buddies as his coordinators, and even though they sucked, he refused to replace them. I have no doubt that Eichorst told him he needed to make some changes, and Pelini tried to call his bluff, and lost his job because of it.

Mighty Nebraska almost hired Houston Nutt from Arkansas, looked like a done deal and their jet was waiting at the Fayetteville airport, etc. But Houston Dale just loved the Razorbacks too much and stayed. Which in kind, began his decline. Maybe they could get Nutt on that plane this time?

In today's world, great leaders have to have...
1) Communication Skills - An effective filter as to what comes out of their mouth because everyone listens and analyzes every single word.
2) Composure - Particularly when under Fire and criticism.
3) Emotional Intelligence - you have to really care about your effect on other people
Bo has several outstanding qualities...passion, intensity, focus, defensive minded smarts, competitiveness...all great for a DC. But he never developed the more mature leadership characteristics critical of an effective Head Coach of a D1 program. Why...never controlled his Anger Management issues in public display.
