After being hired in January 2019, Grinch was a semifinalist for the Broyles Award — annually given to the nation's top assistant coach — in his first year. OU’s defense allowed 330.6 yards and 24.5 points per game that season.

In 2020, the Sooners surrendered an average of 350.6 yards and 21.7 points to opponents. Oklahoma also forced 19 turnovers that season, its most in a single season since 2015.

Currently, OU ranks sixth in the Big 12 in both yards per game allowed with 383.9 and points allowed with 24.2. OU is last in the Big 12 in passing yards allowed per game with 272.9. Conversely, the Sooners have forced a conference-leading 15 turnovers this season.

Grinch considered interviewing for Arizona’s then-vacant head coaching job last December, but stayed at OU. The job went to Jedd Fisch, who has led the Wildcats to an 0-8 record in his first year.

Williams column: 2 more interviews coming, 20+ targets analyzed in Texas Tech coach search

quote:

Members of the Texas Tech football team have the upcoming weekend off for the first time this season. For members of the Tech football coaching search committee, it's anything but break time.

According to people familiar with the search, Tech is preparing to interview two more candidates — Baylor associate head coach and outside linebackers coach Joey McGuire on Thursday and Oklahoma defensive coordinator and safeties coach Alex Grinch on Friday — in the hunt for Matt Wells' successor.

Talks with more targets could follow.

A source with knowledge of Tech's process told A-J Media the search is "exceptionally broad, nationwide" at this point, adding that more than 20 candidates have been closely scrutinized and a dozen have expressed interest directly or through agents.

It’s a sign that a DC is interviewing for an HC job? What? Y’all are crazy.

But someone said it was a done deal that McGuire from Baylor was going to Tech so obviously Aranda was staying at Baylor.

The DC of anywhere interviewing for an HC job is not a sign of anything other than the DC having aspirations to be a HC…

Like that time Dave Aranda left to go to Baylor, because he knew Ed was already out the door.

Oh wait . . . .

And McGuire was reportedly Tech's next option because Dykes was taking the TCU job instead. But TCU is now reportedly interviewing Deion Sanders and Tony Elliott.

It's perfectly clear now.

If TT hires the Baylor guy Aranda comes home.

If Grinch goes to TT, Riley comes to LSU.

It can't be any clearer.
