It's really a perception thing (other than the raise in base). I still think he's got 5 yrs before the lake. Kirby thinks that too, fwiw.

Tyler -

I wouldnt expect it for a number of reasons.

1) no ties to area
2) they'd likely prefer HC experience
3) they'd likely prefer offensive experience
4) they'll probably chase Petersen & Patterson for a day or so before naming Bellotti by mid week

Bonus reason - I still maintain Kirby thinks Bama job is his when Saban leaves.

As a Tampa Bay fan, I am not sure how I feel about this. I guess, he can't be worse than the last one.

I think that's the reason he hasn't taken a HC job or at least a DC job where he wouldn't be considered a puppet.

I'm just shocked.....what in the eff?

It must be him getting out of dodge, but what are the Bucs thinking? This should be interesting.

All perfectly acceptable reasons, thanks

Would Bama fans really be alright promoting Smart from within as HC when Saban does whatever Saban is going to do?

sorry 2 season is a fast trigger

he should have got one more year

When you lose your team, which clearly he did, it's over.

If it was just a subpar season, without the sideline issues, I would agree with you.

You are sure. You are just being slow to admit it to yourself.

I'd be ok with it, Saban trusts him with his defense, he's a successful recruiter, and would likely be taking over a roster that would fit his philosophies.

I'd like to see him acquire a good OC though, I think he'll need that balance more...

Absolutely (well, I only technically speak for me, but I wld be). As Magilla said, he'd inherit a roster that fits his philosophy. That roster would be stacked with talent. Also, it likely wont happen for 3-5 yrs so he'd have time to be effectively groomed - which some in T'town will tell you has already begun.

Also, there are examples of promotion from within prooving successful - Petersen, Pattetson, Chip Kelly jist being a few.

I would. He's from Alabama. He may have played at Georgia, but I don't think he would ever feel the need to "go home". He could never accomplish more in Athens, than he could in Tuscaloosa. I think he's going to be a find head coach one day. I'd rather Alabama strike gold with him, than take the chance on someone else doing so.
