The bigger villain here is the college football calendar, which caused this to happen. And this should be a clarion call for college football power brokers to do what they should anyway: Move the season up. Go back to playing the national championship on or around Jan. 1, then get on with the offseason, rather than the current setup.

That would accomplish nothing.

The problem is that this is the wild west. There is no governing body that can control the contracts of coaches. It can't even the movement of players. This absolutely could get worse.

Pandora's box has been opened. Expecting loyalty to override opportunity is naive. That goes for players and coaches. It also goes for administrators.

Nobody wants the only solution to this problem...collectively bargain with the players and effectively accept this this is a professional league.

Yup. Surprisingly spot on for the NYT.

I just don’t see how this situation can better handled by a coach given the current setup.

Saban is right, the CFB calendar needs to change as it relates to signing day and transfer windows.

All it took was for Chicken to go on a rant about the calendar and suddenly the media is all against the calendar.
Fixed it for you...

The recruiting calendar makes good coaches hostages at their current school...

But seriously, the NCAA are a bunch of idiots...move early signing day to early January or get rid of it completely.
