Kelly is lucky to only have to face about 3-4 Top 25 teams per year at ND (including Bowl Games). In those games over his ND career, here are the results:

'10 - 1-1 record
'11 - 1-2
'12 - 4-1 (lost 42-14 to Bama in the NC, vacated all wins)
'13 - 1-3
'14 - 2-3 (2nd Top 25 win was over LSU in the Bowl)
'15 - 2-3 (Top 25 wins were #21 Temple & #23 Navy)
'16 - 0-2
'17 - 3-3 (3rd win to get to .500 was over LSU in the Bowl)
'18 - 4-1
'19 - 2-2 (Top 25 wins were #18 Virginia & #20 Navy)
'20 - 2-2 (lost 34-10 in ACC Champ to Clemson & 31-14 to Bama in playoffs)

That's a total of 22-23 versus the Top 25 and a handful of those wins were over teams at #15+. Must be nice to fill a schedule with the Syracuse's and Stanford's of the world.

Yeah, but how much gumbo could those Midwest recruits possibly eat?

Guess LSU should’ve kept Ed O if this is the only argument you are going to use

You’re gonna get downvoted til the cows come home but I appreciate you putting this together. This is (and recruiting the South) are my concerns with BK. I’m wanting to like this…

SO? Those were not good LSU teams at all, and he struggled to beat them. One of those wins was an absolute battle to beat an Anthony Jennings led Tiger team.

He did it with kids with a minimum 30 ACT score and outdated facilities. IMO, it’s staggering he did what he did. As another poster said in my favorite post of the day..

“He wins at a school that requires a 30 on the ACT and for student athletes to pass biology and economics while having a full time schedule.

He's going to a school that requires you to spell ACT to get in and has Physical Education and underwater basket weaving as classes once a week.

He's going to kill it in the next 24 months.”

Not close to the only argument. We should have hired Aranda though. Risk is the same, but upside may be higher. I think Kelly will win 9-10 games here, but never a title.

He's had multiple 5 star recruits pretty much every year. He has recruited much better than a bunch of the ranked midwest teams and Stanford that his losses come to.

Harder than Riley, Napier, Fickell, and most others on the list except Kiffin.

I was all for Aranda too. Disappointed he wasn't the guy.

That said, this is a great hire. He's top 10 coach easily, more likely, top 5.

It's already been proven that far lesser coaches can win big at LSU.

this is incorrect, their standards for athletes are higher than the ncaa minimums but not by much

Who cares.

It's common knowledge that ND has a competitive disadvantage in it's recruiting due to the academic standards, so it's hard to use it as a comparison of what he will do at LSU when talent levels are fairly equal or tipped in his favor.

However, the main thing I take away from that is in the past 4 years he was 11-8 against ranked opponents which isn't that bad and he's beaten LSU twice with inferior talent which suggests he's a good coach.

To that end, Manti Te’o is still considered the greatest ND linebacker in the last two decades. He ended having a decent pro career, but how many Manti Te’o type players do we spit out every year?

I’m not even sure ND has any linebackers in the league after Smith got cut. Meanwhile D-White, Kwon, Cox, K’Lavon, Debo, Minter, Queen, Riley…

All I’m saying is, the LSU 4/5 star player is not the same as the Notre Dame 4/5 star player

ND Recruiting rankings:

'13 - 5th Nationally
'14 - 11th
'15 - 13th
'16 - 15th
'17 - 10th
'18 - 10th
'19 - 15th
'20 - 18th
'21 - 9th

Those are good enough classes for an elite coach to be better than 22-23 vs the Top 25.

There are no guarantees, but you can't compare the 2 coaches based upon accomplishments. Not even close.

And he did that at ND. At LSU flip 2-3 of those Ls.

Wrong. He signed one 5 star recruit from 2017-2021. Signed 2 since 2014. That’s two 5 stars in 8 years.
