Per ESPN

quote:

Navy is expected to promote Brian Newberry to head coach, per ESPN sources, elevating the coach who has coordinated Navy's defense since 2019. An announcement is expected in the near future.

Newberry's expected promotion shows that Navy will be sticking to some of the principles of success under Niumatalolo. Athletic director Chet Gladchuk has said publicly that Navy is expected to continue to run the triple-option.

I was hopeful Houston Nutt could have gotten the gig.

And with that it looks like the college portion of the 2022-2023 Coaching Changes Board has come to an end

That's fine, but Niumatalolo didn't have much success with Newberry as DC after his first season.

Not saying Navy's defense was necessarily the problem, but I think it's weird to promote from within so you can continue sticking to principles from the guy you fired.

This is sounding more and more like the AD fired Niumatalolo for personal reasons and not performance. Makes zero sense to elevate their DC when his defenses have been too mediocre to justify a promotion.

Ya, they are going to run the option so that's a foregone conclusion, so you'd think defensive performance would be a key factor hiring a defensive guy, especially him.

Or no one wants to work for him considering how he handled the firing of his previous coach. Either way I think it’s a great hire and I’m excited for the direction of the program.

We haven’t even gotten into the coordinators and assistant coaching changes that are going to happen after signing day

So you fire a coach - in the locker room - after 15 seasons only to promote the DC??

I know the academies have a lot of politics but good lord that’s bad

Ken had become more and more outspoken about some issues he had with how the Navy and service academies as a whole conduct football. This wouldn't surprise me

it was definitely personal. especially the manner in which he was fired. totally unprofessional, especially for the naval academy.
