I’m not claiming he is. But that’s the risk of hiring a G5 coach.

True. Both are possible but you have to acknowledge the risk. G5 success doesn’t always translate into P5 success, and it’s proven to be more the exception than the rule.

Neal Brown is a good coach.

So much of coaching success is timing and getting the right job.

Lots of hot young coaches wouldn’t be so hot if they had to start at West Virginia or Baylor or Iowa State.

P5 success doesn’t always translate to
future success at a larger school either

Coaching hires are risky period

P5 coordinator probably has the highest success rate.

Aranda and Napier were P5 coordinators.

You know what else is the exception to the rule?

Hiring a coach who will win a national championship.

I would be curious which coaches have a higher level of success as HC:

1) head coaches coming from G5 to P5

Or

2) head coaches/coordinators already at a P5 school

I would guess 2 but don't know how to easily find those stats

G5 coaches that are successfully are usually the ones that were at one of the big time programs and were big time recruiters at p5 level.

Neal brown was neither of those.

And he may end uo being that.

Just like Riley may end shitty here, aranda a flash in the pan etc. In the end every hire outside of Saban and urban are a risk.

Would rather Riley and aranda more than napier but don't down play napier by comparing him to every failed g5 coach.

Why not compare him to freeze if you want to do sbc? More of a legit comparison.

So P5 coordinator or P5 HC seems like the best bet based on the current coaching landscape. Thanks for putting that together.

He was good enough to get a head coaching job. And he’s good enough to be in P5 whenever he wants.

As I’ve said, he’s not my pick, but the grief he gets is unwarranted.

Or he could be the next Hugh Freeze.
