I see a lot of people on here suggesting Mawae for OLINE Coach, but I’m not sure I see it.... his daughter is at ASU (I think)..... he’s in an analyst position that’s not as strenuous on duties.... he’s set financially.... gets to sit back, break down film and give his two cents to both coaches and players.

Regardless, glad to see him be mentioned here and having some influence at the program.

Key among the group of coaches was offensive analyst Kevin Mawae, who spent 16 years as a player in the NFL and is the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Half of his career was spent with the New York Jets, which plays less than 20 miles from his school in East Rutherford, N.J. "What I like about him is you can really listen to him and he's just a great coach," Bethea said. "Kevin Mawae, he's a hall of famer. That really just opened my eyes. You can't get better than that -- a hall of famer in the NFL at Arizona State. There is nothing better than that."

Personally, if we’re going to hire ANYBODY with very little experience I want it to be him. We hired Faulk as running back coach with no on-field coaching experience and it’s worked out fairly well. Am I saying all hires would work out the same way? No. But I do know that Mawae loves LSU and is going to be 110% dedicated to his job and getting high character guys to the boot.

Kevin Faulk had on field coaching experience, just not at the college level. He coached at Carencro for a few years.

And was in the program in player personnel before being made an on field coach.

If there was ever 2 LSU players that could handle the job with little experience, I think it would be Faulk & Mawae. I’ll trade a few years of coaching experience for 13 years of tutelage under Belichick. Mawae being an elite Center for 15 years or so means his knowledge level of everything around him was above and beyond. And him being the NFL Player rep for all those years tells you he’s a leader amongst leaders. I’d be willing to take the chance he can articulate what’s in his brain

How do? Two of our top 3 running backs have not looked so great.

I’m talking mainly on the recruiting end of things. Even then our running backs didn’t look bad, our offensive line just doesn’t allow them to see the light of day

It’s a little early to claim that as a victory and Oline coaching and development and recruiting is 100 times more important to a programs success than a RB or WR coach

I agree. I know the usual argument is that being a great player doesn’t automatically translate to being a great coach. And that’s obviously true (although by the nature of the sports, I think that’s more true for baseball and basketball than football), but I think Kevin being a center for so long—even if he wasn’t a HOFer—and the head of the NFLPA proves he’s a good communicator, and I think he would be a great coach.

However, my argument against him would be solely based on recruiting. Not face-to-face in a living room or on campus, etc...—in those situations he can use his NFL success and excel. But I would be worried about the recruiting grind with Kevin. Dude is an NFL Hall of Famer, has likely tens of millions in his account, and played so long that his NFL pension could probably support a regular family by itself.

Is that dude gonna wanna work 7 days a week 52 weeks a year? On his “off days,” is he gonna want to be driving around bum frick Georgia in the middle of a random Tuesday night just to go kiss the arse of some snot-nosed 16-year-old kid and his family? College assistants grind their fricking asses off, but they’re willing to cause the money can be so good. But Kevin doesn’t need the money, and I think he’d burn out pretty quickly. And that’s no knock on him personally—you don’t last that long in the league without grinding and working your arse off. But you usually do it in the league so you don’t ever have to again.

His daughter has been gone from ASU for over a year. He's in line to be the OL coach there. The previous OL coach just retired.

Herm coached Kevin at JETS. He should know him very well, I trust his judgement.

Kevin was asst. OL coach w/ Chicago Bears.

If he is not the next OL coach at ASU, LSU should be keeping an eye on him.

247 has a few articles about him recruiting fairly well for ASU.

I'm not so sure. Especially if he gets to be close to his daughter. I'm sure he missed a lot of time being on the road for the NFL.

Maybe 10 years ago. That ship has sailed. He got a little salty when Rob Sale got a 2nd interview under LM and he didn’t.

Exactly. Recruiting is mainly about the effort and he’s not going to want to deal with the grind
