I think the Texas crowd assumed that they could make an offer that bama couldn't touch, thus guaranteeing that saban couldn't turn down their offer. Once "done deal" is repeated enough it's taken as fact, especially if you're arrogant enough that "no" isn't normal.

I firmly believe Mack's gone.
He has to be gone to move their program forward. They have options and can get a great coach.
I just don't think Saban is that coach. Don't think it's too far fetched to believe that.
