The AD disagrees with you.
Hiring Fickell over Leonhard is because he indeed wants to compete with those schools.
*lol MSU

BB-64 is aiming those guns at both Columbus and Ann Arbor with this hire.

For those that don't know what BB-64 is.
USS Wisconsin. The Navy's last commissioned battleship.

Fickell once dropped PJ Fleck at an OSU practice when they were both coaches there.
I like this hire even more.

McIntosh said Fickell and Leonhard would talk but doesn't know if they'll agree on a role for Leonhard at Wisconsin going forward.
"It's between them. I don't know if it could [happen], it could probably only be under someone like Luke who has gone through it himself."

I see someone has been reading my posts on Buckyville!

Buckyville sucks
Too many know it all progs on there with attitudes
I am excited to see Fickle and his staff recruit some top 20 classes to Madison.
Next year is an EASY schedule.
If he can figure out the QB spot maybe he gets the program going right away

Laugh all you want. He took the job because all Barry and Bret had to do was go to the Rose Bowl when other schools had a down year or made the playoffs. He's getting a good salary and with reduced expectations. Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl or some other NY6 bowl when other Big Ten schools make the playoffs.

Bingo.

Yep. His class this year is 27 at frigging Cincy. If he doesn't get UW classes consistently into the top 20 I'll be very surprised. Top 15 should be doable.

Pretty sure we have seen the last of Mertz.

I want Hermann at OC but the usual pants pissers are howling he is a "slimeball".
Don't recall what would cause that reaction. Guys a good OC and frankly shouldn't have been fired from Texas.

Though Luke Fickell and Tom Herman were at Ohio State together, they are very different - Fickell, by all accounts, is a stand-up dude that is well-liked by everyone in the building. Same can't be said for Herman; he lacks so much humility and has alienated people at every stop. I'm just not sure how that would mesh with Fickell's staff.
If I'm Fickell, I try bringing Gino Guidugli to Madison. Would be tough to pull Gino from Cincinnati, but he does have random playing experience in Wisconsin. After that name, I wouldn't be overly shocked to see Fickell take a run at Sean Lewis. There have been reports that Lewis would like to be at Wisconsin even as an assistant - more than doubling his salary isn't an issue.
In any case, I think Fickell has his guy for all these posted positions. Should be a fun week or two ahead!
ETA: I don't mean to advocate for or against Herman, but just giving some thought as to why it may not be a great fit.

Per Wisconsin, Luke Fickell spent an hour with Jim Leonhard Sunday and will have another meeting with him Wednesday. He stated that he's "very open" to exploring options with Leonhard, which would assume having him stay on as defensive coordinator #Badgers

Would it? I assume it would be a large raise and who knows if the next HC will be interested in him.
My concern with Gino is that he is a little green an an OC

Looks like the contract is 7 years at $7.9m/year

How the hell did Wis land Fickle!!??!! I thought no-one could pull him cause he was waiting for Day to jump to the NFL? Fickle was looked at by a lot of ppl over the last 2-3 years and he rebuffed them all.
