They had Spurrier and Meyer. We had Saban.

I’d call it about even.

I think you should include Miles as a positive for LSU. It was often boring but he was a good coach at LSU for a long time.

Mike Archer and Curley shaped LSU hires for decades

It blows my mind that Saban and Orgeron coached LSU the same number of years

Looking at this. Boy how things could have been different if we made the right hire in 2005 and hired Meyer instead.

How different do you think it would’ve been?

Miles at LSU
112-32 (72.5%)
1 national championship, 1 loss in championship game

Meyer at Florida
65-15 (77%)
2 national championships

Meyer was better, but it’s close. He also left Florida before the inevitable post-Tebow decline.

Following Saban , Meyer would have done more than Miles for sure . Meyer following Zook at Florida not so great to follow up on .

Since both programs have won three national championships I'd have to say that you're correct.

Both of those lists show that there’s no proven path to successfully hiring a college football coach.

Nearly every path except NFL head coach is represented.

Not a single coach on the list came as an elite P5 coach. The ones that were head coaches at all, were G5 or low level P5.

Close to the same record (48/16 v. 50/20) and same number of national championships, too.

Lsu has only had 5 coaches during my life. Pretty crazy.

Of course Saban had an upward trajectory, while O, well, we all know.

He was 8-4 his first year at LSU. He was 9-4 his last year at LSU. He had one great year. O is no Saban by any means, but their results at LSU were pretty similar. Saban is correctly credited with turning the program around, though.
