LSU does not have a history of making splash hires.

At the time, Saban wasn’t even a splash hire. In fact he wasn’t a splash hire at bama coming off a 500 NFL record.
Since I’ve been following LSU football here are the head coaching hires:
McClendon
(Rein)
Stovall
Arnsparger
Archer
Hallman
DiNardo
Saban
Miles
O
At the time of their hire none of these coaches were splash hires. LSU has a long history hiring less than splash hires.
What makes you think that will change now?

I’m not sure I get your argument. Saban hadn’t been pursued before Rich Rod, but I think most wouldn’t have thought Saban was going to leave the NFL to go back to college. It was essentially a Hail Mary by Mal Moore that worked out. It was a big deal when it happened.
