Just wanted to get a thread started to have some light discussions on what we are looking to achieve on schemes from each candidate.

These are pretty basic articles on Gibson's and Baker's schemes. I figured others can add in different links as they find them.

Gibson's 3-3-5

- I'm not really sure how I feel about LSU playing a defense that is typically reserved for undersized teams, but with our defensive talent as it currently stands it may be a decent move. It may also be a move based off of the type of smaller athletes recruited out of LA. We will be light on the DL numbers next year and heavy on DBs and LBs. This will have Penn and Weeks manning the middle and Perkins playing a more versatile role at OLB. I also think this helps getting those hybrid guys on the field more, i.e. Tylen Singleton, Kylin Jackson, and Brathwaite. Shone and Maason will have have to clog the middle because we may be susceptible to a power run game.

Baker's 4-2-5

- I'm more partial to Baker's 4-2-5 that employs basically 3 safeties. Perkins can play Baker's STAR position as well as Kylin Jackson. It's basically a box safety as the 5th defensive back/3rd linebacker. This will give us the ability to go back to the base 4-down linemen, and put Saivion Jones, Jaxon Howard and Da'shawn Womack into more traditional hand in the dirt defensive ends. We have the ability to be aggressive with run blitzes from different areas to help get back those TFLs we have been missing. We should also be able to pressure the QB on passing situations with just 4 rushers. You have to believe either Smith, Howard, Womack, or McKinley should be able to get home on a 4-man rush a good bit.

I understand that both of these are base packages and hopefully the new DC can adjust to personnel, but I'd like to see some discussion on the best defensive schemes for the type of athlete we recruit at LSU.

I like the 335 more than most.

I think a school like LSU with the players you attract you gotta lean 425

4-2-5 with the ability to be multiple. Most importantly, we need it to be easy to pick up and assistants who absolutely demand form tackling or know how to teach the fundamentals of defensive football. We’ve lost that aspect of our defense.

The name of the game is to be able to disguise or be multiple, easy to communicate, fundamentals, allow your athletes to play fast/ comfortable and feature your best players at each level but also adjust within the game.

So feature your best players but also teach them that other players can be featured throughout the game which can help that featured player and entire defense. When offenses design plays to naturalize your best players, the other guys on defense need to recognize it and take advantage of the weakness this provides.

I’d also like whoever the DC is to teach them to be humble and not get overly emotional on any given play. Just dominate and make plays. Keep your awareness at all times on the field. Don’t teach individual plays, teach defensive team play which turns into individual plays. Tackle the ball, plus the player, not just the player. Set up your sack, don’t just sack the QB. Know when and how fast to attack. Play smart, fast and aggressive together not just smart, fast and aggressive. Know your teammates and team because without them, you’re alone and vulnerable.

To me - our base defense should be 4/3 with two LBs than can cover like safeties. You have to get pressure, not necessarily sacks, on every pass play. Most teams, even non power 5 teams have the size to handle 3 down most of the time. Letting any QB survey and throw and then try to cover is a bad plan. There just aren’t many bad QBs in the SEC.

Minter runs a 3-3-5 now also. Just for the swing for the fences pie in the sky option.

So no more flexing over a rb after a routine tackle 12 yds downfield. Lol. I’m all for that

I don’t think it will be Baker even if he hasn’t signed his new deal.

Only reason is no supposed insider has been close on any info in like 2 or 3 years

Thanks for the great info. Do you have any info on the other candidates?

In the write up about Baker’s 4-2-5 Defense, I noticed the author mentioned, the aggressive style may lead to some big plays. It seems like playing our passive style this year gave up more big plays, I have never seen so many 3rd and 10+ converted with such ease.

I hope the next hire has a more aggressive approach that will make an offense adjust.

It was a great write up.

In today’s football I would rather be agressive and force turnovers and big sacks at the risk of a big play or two. You can’t sit back and let teams slice and dice you.
