The scenario after last year, for those who don't recall:

9-4, after the abortion that was the previous season.

Many were calling for Miles' head (a good number still are)

This season certainly didn't look promising, a common thought was that if 8-4 happened Miles would be canned.

Now let's apply those things to Crowton's contract situation:
He had two years remaining after the extension (this year and next) at $400,000 (minimum)

That would be $800,000 to buy him out. Next, we would have had to get another coordinator (probably $400,000 minimum), none of which would have come here with less than a three year contract. ($1,2000,000 minimum commitment.)

So let's say we did go 8-4 this year and Miles got fired, leaving a new coach to fill his own staff. That would have been a $2,000,000 (minimum) commitment for one year of a better offensive coordinator with terrible choices at quarterback. It's not really hard to see why those in charge would choose not to make that move with the highly likely (it seemed) possibility that this would be Miles' last season here.

I'm not saying I agree with it, only that I think that was the reason.

So in other words, we gave up a BCS payday this year (roughly $1M + over any other bowl) to keep Crowton and save $400k?

Do you not see that we actually lost money? Also, Les wasn't going to get fired this year. PERIOD unless the team went below 0.500. That wasn't going to happen with Vandy, McNeese St, and ULM on the schedule.

LSU basically wasted an NC caliber defense to save $450,000. Genius, I tell you. GENIUS!

I didn't say that, I said that we would have had at minimum a $2,000,000 commitment to something that could have been only a year.

I'm all for getting rid of Gary Crowton, just as I was last year. Maybe we would have made it to the BCS, maybe not. I'm not sure how different the breakdown would be being that LSU gets 1/13th of the bowl payout for their bowl.

This thread in no way was meant to defend the decision, just to provide some possible rationale for it.

I disagree with you that 8-4 wouldn't have had LSU looking for a new coach.

Well, you also ignore that we just committed over $2.1+ million to Chavis. If Miles were to be fired, we'd be out on that too.

Your premise makes absolutely no sense. They were willing to spend that kind of money to keep Chavis, so obviously they weren't planning on Les going anywhere.

Chavis just finished the second year of his deal. When Chavis was hired, it was after the first poor season under Miles. Replacing Crowton would have been paying him for two years that we didn't use, and paying another OC for three years that we may only get one of. That's a possibility of paying for 5 seasons of an OC salary for one year's work. Chavis' deal would have been paying for 2 years for one years work, worst case.

They aren't remotely the same situation.

112th total offense in 2009 and 93rd in 2010 should not get anyone an additional year of employment.

How many utterly terrible seasons does it take to fire a coach?

Just seems hard to accept that we're making these kind of commitments to the likes of Chavis/Crowton.

Couldn't say. LSU hasn't had any utterly terrible seasons in recent history.

There is no excuse for TAF not to be able to buy out the one year remaining on Crowton's contract, NONE! He's got to go and the sooner the better.

And dont those clause usually stipulate that is minus any other money he makes coaching. So if he gets another job as OC somewhere and makes 250k we ony owe him 150k right?
