It doesn't seem like it was the case this time and it's more that Kentucky was too embarrassing to keep O publicly employed, but having a hire in principle before firing the current coach is a very Woodward move. I know several A&M fans told me that they would bet large sums of money that O got fired after an upset win because Woodward got the hire in principle. This has been in the motion since off season last yearm so it's not like it's gone as fast as it may seem anyway.
fwiw this is also pretty consistent with what Voltiger has said. Jimbo isn't necessarily the guy, but Woodward and Sexton have an agreement on what terms would get him to leave. Coaches that Jimbo would keep are told that they're safe because Woodward would rather Jimbo+those coaches+a slightly salvaged class over the names above him on the internal list, so keeping them is a condition of the offer for people higher up than him (I'm guessing they're no brainers that the new coach would be dumb to run out like Raymond too). I'm not saying this is definitely what happened, but this is completely consistent with leaks and would make sense.
Though of course tigerbaitlawyer has maintained that Riley is the only name he's heard in which case there isn't a hire in principle. In a vacuum I'd definitely go with tbl over vol, but there are definitely scenarios where both are right and the two just have very different thresholds for "reliable enough to talk about".

Sorry buddy, but you don’t know what your talking about.
Scott Woodward doesn’t have to create the “perception” of demand for LSU football’s HC position - there’s plenty of ‘organic’ demand for the job, b/c it’s one of the very few whereat you can win national championships.
In other words, the seller of LSU’s head coaching job inherently has tremendous leverage without needing to leak a damn thing - b/c Jobs of LSU‘s caliber are in short supply and they are highly coveted (demanded) by hundreds, if not thousands, of coaches.
The source(s) of 99% of the initial leaks for our job originate from agents of other coaches - leaked for the benefit of their clients in the form of extensions, raises &/or an interview w/ Woodward.
Lastly, there is no question that Woodward will leak information if/when appropriate. That said, I doubt he has to send out too many smoke screens to protect himself, as the LSU media & fanbase do a more than adequate job of starting & spreading gossip that gives him all the cover needed to pursue legitimate candidates

This works both ways. Coaches agents create rumors as well.
So the point is, you can’t control rumors, particularly when you give them several months’ opportunity to develop.
And LSU is an attractive job. It has proven to be one of the best paying jobs that also offers plenty of funds in support for both staff and facilities. It’s one of the best recruiting positions in the country. It has an established brand that has won national championships with several coaches.
The rumors are swirling because they have an opportunity to. You fire a coach mid season from a school that won the championship only one opportunity ago, and you will get rumors.
This isn’t difficult people.

I know someone who had lunch with Woodward last week and he told him nothing. He does not participate in purposefully leaking misinformation. He has better things to do with his time.
