chavis is the safe pick. you know what you're going to get with Chavis, and he knows what he's going up against every week

walker is the gamble, both in style and results

Agreed...still not sure what makes him the best candidate for the job.

Chavis seems like a slam dunk hire for Miles...

i think with walker it's 2 things: (1) DB expertise and (2) pressure-based system

when he has the horses, his DL gets upfield. our fans miss that

Walker has been a cood for 2 years. Before that he was a position coach. Why is he a better candidate than a guy that has been a cood for over a decade in the sec?

1) Tenn fans overwhelmingly love the guy

They've had a long time to watch his defense. This is a good thing.

2) His defenses finishd the last 5 years ranked 45th (2004), 7th (2005), 50th (2006), 70th (2007) and 4th (2008)

2 top 10 defenses in the last 5 years. That is awesome. I don't think you can ask for much more than that. Those other years are a concern, but I'd have to look further into those #s. Where did they rank in scoring defense during those years?

quote:

3) Many are concerned that his so-called "Mustang" package is far too similar to the soft-zone we deployed in recent years at LSU

Why people complain about Pelini's defense, I have no idea. Ask yourself if you'd be satisfied with a similar defense. If the answer is no, then the problem is with you.

quote:

4) Most insist that Coach O coaches the Dline if CHavis is the DC

It would be a very good thing. One of the things I've heard about Chavis is his defense goes from good to dominant when he's got a front 4 that can create pressure. Having Orgeron to coach the D-Line and recruit pass rushers would be huge.

quote:

5) Most feel that he is looking for a long-term home since that is his history...meaning we better be sure of this hire given the Miles track record of loyalty

Miles just fired 2 friends after 1 year. I don't see much of a track record of him being overly loyal to his coaches.

Chavis is a very good coach. If he's performing well, the fact that he's willing to stay for a while should be viewed as a HUGE advantage.

quote:

6) LSU has had better talent on the field, so that comes into play

The biggest advantage I see with Chavis at LSU over Tennessee is the recruiting prowess that LSU has under Miles. They literally can go get guys who are custom fit for Chavis' scheme as needed...especially with Orgeron.

The bottom line is this. Our defensive coaching staff was unable implement the basic fundamentals defensively this year. The defense had many, many holes in it and the players were frustrated because of it.

Chavis brings the knowledge and experience to make sure that all of our bases are covered. He understands how to implement and call a defense. I would be very surprised if we aren't very happy with Chavis if he indeed is the hire.

Tennessee has had not had the talent LSU has enjoyed the last 7 years, I am sorry but they haven't, that matters if your looking at stats.

Everyone keeps saying that Chavis will have so much more talent to work with at LSU, but since 2002 Tenn has had 23 defensive players drafted by the NFL, while LSU has had 18.

As I posted before, over the last five years Chavis's defenses have finished with an average national ranking of 35th. This year we are ranked 36th and everyone wants run Mallory and Peveto out of town on a rail.

what's your solution? Should we hire a guy who will be gone in 2 years and be without another coordinator? Walker has not proven much of anything, yet people keep creaming their panties over him.

I haven't seen anyone else say this, but you know another reason Chavis' defense may not have been outstanding the past few years besides talent level, is a poor offense on the other side of the ball. A bad offense puts a lot of pressure on the D, especially when they throw a pick by their own endzone and all of a sudden the D has to run on the field and try to stop a pumped up team who is a few yards from scoring.

That's a huge reason our D was bad this year. All the pick 6's and stuff demoralized the team and put the D in tough positions...but co-DC's weren't a good idea either

So what's your solution? To cream in your panties over a guy whose defenses over the last five years have averaged about the same as ours did this year?

Do you really think our defensive was the 36th best defense?

We were ranked in the 80s in passing defense. That meant that even as LSU made plays and played well, teams were able to throw at will and convert on downs that they shouldn't have been able to.

Plus, we played a very poor out of conference schedule that should have made our stats look good...yet we were still ranked 80+.

I would say if our defense really reflected a 36th ranking, fans wouldn't have been nearly as concerned as they were.

well UT's offenses have been horrible the past several years and for Chavis to be able to keep them near the top the way he has says something about the man. This year they only gave up 16 or 17 ppg which is really good considering the position the offense put them in.

Or if we were ranked significantly better in scoring defense, and perhaps averaged less than 20 points/game and not given up near the amount of points we've had.

Teams can rank well in total defense all they want but if they're stinking it up in scoring defense and giving up an assload of points, then you got problems, like Georgia.

We've given up 311 points this year in 12 games, but 42 of those points came on JLEE pick 6's and we are playing in one less game than we did last year.

Ranking in the 80s against the pass isn't going to get it done against quality teams.

It sure isn't.

Muschamp's defense is ranked #50 in total d, but are at #20 in scoring right now. They've given up 223 points but I know McCoy had one pick 6 at least.

If we had given up points like that, Mallory would probably be returning in 2009.

As long as Chavis doesn't play soft zone, everything will be okay!!!

If we can get our LBers into better position, and teach our DBs how to tackle, we will be ten times better instantly. Chavis is a good hire, Oregeron is a brilliant hire, and to complete the puzzle, we need a great hire at DBs coach.
