1) Tenn fans overwhelmingly love the guy
2) His defenses finishd the last 5 years ranked 45th (2004), 7th (2005), 50th (2006), 70th (2007) and 4th (2008)
3) Many are concerned that his so-called "Mustang" package is far too similar to the soft-zone we deployed in recent years at LSU
4) Most insist that Coach O coaches the Dline if CHavis is the DC
5) Most feel that he is looking for a long-term home since that is his history...meaning we better be sure of this hire given the Miles track record of loyalty
6) LSU has had better talent on the field, so that comes into play

Why is he viewed as the solution to our defensive woes?

Perhaps he is, but it is certainly not a slam dunk hire given the offenses (pass-competent and pass-oriented) we are facing the upcoming years. Or is it?

It's not rocket science...some will be happy, some will be pissed, and some won't give a shite. All 3 guys that have been considered publicly are good enough to deserve the job - and there is no DC in college football that would give a unanimous "A+" by the fans.

Looks like he is it. Good or bad! Las Cruces Sun says Walker will be in Cruces to view the facilities and be offered the job.

Didnt he basically escort his two friends to the door after ONE year on the job?

My problem with this is that I believe TN fans are OK with mostly good seasons. 9-3's up and down the decade and they're just fine.

Pretty much nailed. Most people here dont seem to be enamored with Chavis. Thus we desperately need Coach O to compensate.

We missed out on Walker and Willis.

We hired a DB coach with no experience coaching and fresh out of Grad assistant.

If we had a Walker/Coach O/Willis hiring. People here would be doing backflips.

Chavis is a safe hire. He is a proven D-cood. that has a game plan for every sec team, so he will not have to learn on the job. I would be thrilled if LSU were to get Chavis.

Missed out? B/c the rumors had to be accurate, right?

Yes Chavis is better than Malleveto, but I still think and many on the board still think that LSU could do better.

Since some of Chavis's defenses over the years have been statistically worse than LSU's this year

not sure how real getting these 2 ever was, esp. Willis

we haven't hired anybody yet. I doubt if it is Chavis that they take Raymond just yet, may let him work as a GA a while longer.

Maybe so, that was the trifecta, dream team by some here.

I like the idea of Walker too, but Chavis knows the SEC, and is loved at UT for a reason.

Tennessee has had not had the talent LSU has enjoyed the last 7 years, I am sorry but they haven't, that matters if your looking at stats.

Chavis is probably a better fit

With O coming, it's huge to get both IMO

Chavis is a LB specialists, probably much better than Willis...so you get the DL fixed with O, LB fixed with Chavis and we bring in a NFL player who is an LSU alumni to coach the DB's..

I like it alot!

Way to go Les!

He is a very safe, vanilla hire.

Well, there's still a few days left. Be quick and get your shut-down DC prospect list over to CLM in Atlanta! Hurry how, ya heah?

You are of course referring to Miles' undying friendly "loyalty" to his co-DCs after a single year on the job, righto?

yes, because fans being enamored is certainly the most critical factor Miles should be considering...

That's exactly what I've been thinking. Before UT had been having these up and down years everyone keeps referring to, I remembered they're defenses being pretty aggressive. I kept hearing how that the d-line has been they're weak spot and Chavis has adjusted his approach so maybe there is some truth to it.

All I know is that Walker seems to be a good coach but why would we want him here just to audition himself for a head coaching job and be gone in 2 years? Chavis has proven himself in the SEC and probably will be here longer which is what we need. Les is offensive minded so it makes more sense to have a more stable DC so we don't have to keep replacing him every 2 or 3 years.

How so? Or perhaps you're simply overlooking the glaringly obvious fact that Walker is so desperate for a HC position, ANY HCing job, ANYWHERE he can find one, at ANY level in CFB, he'd probably not be the best hire as LSU's DC, or as DC at any other major CFB powerhouse?

How can this be? Easy. Any coordinator who is so fixated and blinded by overwhelming ambitious desire to take the first HCing job offer that comes along likely isn't going to be as dedicated as he needs to be where he's currently employed.

I'm all for ambition on the job, that's a good thing, but an all-consuming, never-ending type of ambition that short changes your current employer? Methinks not.

Bo wanted a HCing job, but he was discriminating enough to want a big-time program ... and except for what I believe to have been some lapses near the end of the season - who doesn't bring everything, including my kitchen sink, and blitz Casey Dick in OT on 4th and a mile? - Bo focused on managing and overseeing LSU's D while he was here. He didn't let his ambition to become a big-time CFB HC override the job he was being paid by LSU to do.

The SEC knows Nick Saban and the SEC knows Urban Meyer. The Big 12 knows Mack Brown, Bob Stoops and Mike Leach.

What difference does that make?

If you think that makes no difference, then why does Chavis knowing the SEC make a difference? Over a decade of tendencies to study is something that factors into gameplans.
