One of the books a decade or so ago had a fairly thorough summary of Virginia Tech's expenses going to a minor bowl. By the time all the players, band members, important people had paid for hotel rooms for a lot more than two days, transportation, food, and misc., the school lost money, quite a bit of money.
The swag bags are good for the 'big' games. Not so much for lesser games.
It was their decision. We probably ought to say OK, they are adults and entitled to decide how they want to spend this December.

I would take away scholarships from every player that voted to not play.

Some of those guys may never play football again. Why would you turn it down?

This was not abnormal many years ago. Teams would refuse a bowl game for diff reasons. Some even refused the first invitation hoping to get a better one and missed out. I forget the exact teams but just saying.

What kind of school leadership even gives the players this option?
Welcome to college football in 2025. Better than accepting it and then having > 50% opt out in my opinion.

the Cotton Bowl decided to take Notre Damned over LSU
This still makes me angry. LSU was 9-1-0. Notre Dame was 8-1-1. The only winning team ND beat that year was Air Force 6-4-0.

I don’t get it. Don’t play bc your coach retired?

And in reading that part of why he is retiring is he didn't like the current landscape of college football.

what's the reasoning?
Being widely discussed in the Midwest, particularly coverage in K.C. and he and K-State AD Gene Taylor, who was visibly upset, shaken at the news conference announcing his retirement. Both alluded to Klieman’s health during the conference, but purposely vague if they were referring to mental or physical health.
quote:
Klieman alluded to the decision being “the culmination of many factors, including my own personal health.” Taylor also referred to Klieman mentioning his health
His players may have gotten devastating news, if you know what Klieman looked like 7 years ago when he accepted the K-State job he looked like a fullback, he looks as if he’s aged 20 years as opposed to 7.

Why wouldn't you give them the option. It's the players who are actually going out there to play. You said to put the program first, but the players are the program.

Players come and go. The program belongs to the institution. Silly to think otherwise.
