Back in 2012, the Auburn Tigers were looking for a new head coach and decided to interview then-Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.
However, before the interview, Smart promised Alabama coach Nick Saban that he’d stay on the Crimson Tide staff through the national championship game.
In a new profile piece from ESPN’s Chris Low, Smart explained his promise to Saban and why it was important to him:
“I promised [Saban] that I would stay on at Alabama to coach through the national championship game if I got the job,” Smart told ESPN. “It was important to me to finish what I started.”
Though Auburn was impressed with Smart, the school decided to go with Gus Malzahn instead. According to the story, Smart said outgoing Auburn AD Jay Jacobs was uncomfortable with the idea of Smart staying as Alabama’s coordinator for an extra month:
“The others on the search committee [Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan] were good with it, I think, but I don’t think Jay could ever get past the thought of the Auburn coach coaching at Alabama for another month and all that went into that,” Smart said. “I get that, and the truth is it worked out the way it was supposed to. My experience is that it usually does.”

Jacobs was a PTB booster cabana boy chode. You're not breaking new ground here. No offense.

Not sure I believe that anyway. The ball sniffers hate us so much, I'm sure somebody told him he frickin A better not if he hoped to come home at some point.

The only thing about that that helps me sleep at night is knowing he would have been in Athens 2 years later anyway. And we did enjoy some decent success under Gus those 2 years.

If he was dominating at AU we would not care if he coached in orange and blue his entire career at UGA.

Vince Dooley went to Auburn
Darrell Royal went to Oklahoma
Alma matter doesn’t always matter, no guarantee he’d have left

If that happens, there’s no Kick Six or 2013 SEC title… and smart might’ve taken the UGA job when richt left anyway… smart also was likely a better coach in 2015 than he was in 2012.
Point is there’s no guarantee AU would be the juggernaut UGA is today.

Pat Dye was a Georgia alum who was an assistant at Alabama under Bryant and then was the head coach for 12 years at Auburn. Alma mater isn’t always everything.

Apparently he was a strong candidate for the Arkansas job in 2013 as well, but Bert wrote and unsolicited love letter to Jeff Long and conned himself into about $40M (including buyout) to win about 20% of his conf games.
What a hire!
