Jimbo isn't a top5 coach.

Neither is Kirby. College football is an arms race, whoever spends the most wins the most.

There seems to be a large number of people who think LSU is a top 5 job that every coach will be fighting over, and that never comes to fruition.

Do we think any of the realistic candidates are top 5 coaches in America?

Franklin - no
Tucker - hell no
Aranda - no
Napier - no
Kiffin - no
You can really play dumb when you want to. When people say top job they mean the top candidates would want to come here. Why would guys like Day, Smart, Swinney, Saban, Riley, or Fisher leave their jobs? Fisher gets paid insane amounts of money to be mediocre, UGA, Oklahoma, and Ohio St are right up there with LSU as a top job already. Dabo made Clemson relevant in the modern era, and Saban has built a kingdom at one of the most historic football programs in the country.

When people talk top 5 that means taking a guy like James Franklin away from Penn St. Franklin likely finishes 10-3 this year giving him 4 double digit win seasons in the past 6 years. That might also put him in the top 10 making it 4 top 10 finishes in the past 6 years. How in the HELL can you hate that given the recruiting restrictions (harder to get into), and Ohio St, Michigan, recruiting as they do. Hell even Maryland has had 3 top 25 classes the past 4 years, in the same division. He has 4 straight top 15 recruiting finishes and one being 6th overall.

As of right now he is the biggest, most successful, most consistent, and at the highest peak of realistic candidates.

Think if we would have hired Kirby when Georgia did. Everyone would have melted. A younger aggressive coach with LSU resources will make it a top 5 job

Did you think Les Miles or Ed Orgeron was a Top 5 coach?

Just because it’s a top 5 job in CFB doesn’t mean you can hire one of the five best. They’re already successful at schools that pay them a lot and are at schools heavily invested in football. I think Franklin is easily the best option of those potentially/realistically available. I think Napier is the best option of the up and coming coaches. The last three HC’s at LSU have won NC’s so there will be a lot of interest for sure.

It's what Tennessee thought they were getting with Pruitt. He too was a great DC that could recruit. Kirby panned out Pruitt didn't.

I would be happy with Luke Fickell or Freeze would be great.

Nick Saban is the gold standard & very few coaches come close to his success rate. Personally, I think James Franklin is a great coach. What he did at Vanderbilt was unprecedented. I’d say that job is the toughest in the SEC. I’d pursue him, but I doubt he will leave PSU.

A job so good we couldn't even land the HC of UH as I recall.

Yet he has losing records against teams that matter.

And he won a national championship in convincing fashion from the first snap of the season.
