Joe really hasn't been left any option

Put yourself in his shoes...
The rabid fanbase that once was calling for Miles head, has turned and is now demanding Miles stays! That the world could collapse without him. Even talks of emailing the Athletic department and Marches for Miles. Joe must try to maintain Les in order to appease the fanbase. Miles is playing poker trying to get an extension and more money. With the fans toting him as the winningest coach in LSU history, Joe has very little bargaining power.
Other hand, he doesn't give into Miles demands and let's Miles walk. He has to take the risk of putting his head on the chopping block if his hire fails. I'd say it makes more sense for Joe to play it safe and give miles what he wants.
I'm not saying "sources" or my brothers friends step dad talked to Joe, but I look for this all to be put to rest in the next couple of days. Miles will have his new contract. It simply has a few items still to be ironed out.
Take this as opinion. I'm not answering questions on how I know. It's opinion. There's nothing 100% factual and concrete until Miles officially tells UM no... Neither side ever really were crushing on each other very hard. This whole situation was really speculated upon more than actually went down, Atleast up till today.

With LSU closing entire departments, no way they give Miles MORE money.

I'm all for Miles staying, but he is being paid plenty for one SEC championship in 6 seasons. If he is asking for $5-6 million, let him go. That's too much for what he has accomplished.
If he wants more security, he is already under contract till 2014. He'll be 60 or 61 at that point. How many years does he want?
Try and keep him, but don't put LSU in a horrible situation to do so. This is all Miles' doing. Not sure why he should get more money out of this.

I'd imagine closer to the $5 million range.
As for length, last time around he received a 7yr. I can't see them offering that much again. But, a guaranteed additional year added to the contact based upon performance is definitely still in play. LSU was talking about re-negotiating and rolling over the contract mid season. They were scheduled to address it this post season anyway. They just lost alot of bargaining power with the UM deal.

It's comical. But, I wouldn't trade our fanbase for any in the country. If we would have dropped the A&M game or if the timing of this followed the UTenn game people would be singing a whole other tune.

I say it's money well spent if we pay Miles a little more to get off the hook for that buyout. I figure 4.5 million and bonus money for winning the SEC West, SEC Championship and the BCS NC. I damn sure don't mind paying the man a big fat bonus for winning a NC.

I'd agree with you guys there.
I'd really like to see them toughen up the requirements to add an additional year to his contract. Example, (I could be wrong) but I want to say as bad as a product he fielded last year actually earned him an additional year. Traditionally,(not the 2011 season) but we have 1 OOC game of relevance and SEC, after that creampuffs. 8 wins is usually a gimme.

Miles staying at LSU for the mean time is definitely in the best interest of the program/school. I think Alleva realizes that. The problem I have with the situation is the overblown salary he may sign off on to keep him here.
Miles, with his current salary up to, but not over $4.2M I'm ok with. Any higher and LSU needs to look elsewhere. What a PR nightmare to give him a raise to $5M without merit during a time when LSU is cutting programs and faculty to make ends meet.

That might explain why as recently as the middle of last week, Alleva had not even started a list of potential replacements should LM bolt.

Not sure about demanding that Miles stay.
Just in my opinion, it may be time for fresh blood that is hell driven to win a championship.

The "employee" is out interviewing to work for a competing organization. Most people get fired for that kind of "loyalty", and you think he should get a raise.
