After speculation he would use last season’s FCS national championship to make a jump to FBS, Mike Houston is instead sticking around at James Madison.
The school on Tuesday announced a 10-year contract for Houston that lasts through 2027. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“James Madison is a special place. Amanda, our boys and I want to be here and consider this home,” Houston said in a statement. “JMU approached me in in the second half of the regular season to discuss an extended contract. During negotiations, there was significant interest from multiple FBS programs. Throughout the process, JMU was proactive in wanting to make a long-term commitment while ensuring that our staff could remain intact. I’ve turned down opportunities at the FBS level, and I did it because I believe in James Madison University. I believe in the leadership of Jeff Bourne, Senior Vice President Charlie King and President Jonathan Alger. I believe in their vision for our university and our athletics programs. I also believe in our student-athletes, everyone in athletics who supports us and the passionate fan base that cheers for us. I am committed to ensuring that the JMU football program is one that is a reflection of our outstanding institution. I’m committed to staying here because JMU is different.”
In his second season on the job, Houston is 26-1 as head coach of the Dukes. He led JMU to its second FCS national title in 2016 and has the club at 13-0 and in the FCS semifinals this season.

I was hoping someone like him, young and hungry, could have been brought on as the Cajuns new Head Coach.

how much does a guy like him make? I know the extension terms weren't announced but I jus wonder what he makes now. I actually admire a person that seeks happiness over money. of course, a low paid person doesn't do that but if the guy makes several hundred K a year and his wife pulls down a decent salary then I can understand not chasing the huge contracts. esp living in such a fine state as Virginia plus I bet the school gives him some other perks like maybe a housing allowance, etc

I was wondering the same thing. I was surprised to read that he has only been there two years.
All I know about JMU is that Mike Hoss went to college there and loved it, and it's in the Shenandoah Valley, so it's a beautiful area of VA.

He started out making 300k. Not sure what his raise was.
Turner Gill at Liberty is the highest paid FCS coach. He makes 750k.

The valley looks a little rough compared to the Piedmont.
The university also has the misfortune of straddling the interstate.

Where is the VA Piedmont?

For example. UTEP's last coach made 500k. So if you have a legit FCS gig you aren't jumping to FBS just for the sake of it.

The Piedmont would be the area east of the Blue Ridge. Charlottesville down to Richmond, up through the western suburbs of DC.
Harrisonburg isn't bad, the Mennonite are nice people, but the foothills of the Piedmont are fantastic. Grew up in the area.

ok, say he was raised to 400k; about what a senior pilot with a major airline makes. if wifey works (probably at the university) she could probably pull down 75k. he's in a low pressure situation with players that are probably true student athletes. in a beautiful area and maybe has family nearby and i'll bet his kids have school preferences (like university school) with free tuition at James Madison and other perks.
he'll never get fired as long as he is decent and keeps his nose clean. recruiting pressure is very low.
there's a lot to be said for that job if a guy isn't hugely materialistic and likes the low key academic environment. i'm sure he's got a car provided for him and 400k should allow you to buy a pretty nice house and car for the wifey.
there is a lot of money in football, even at that level.

The Piedmont is the land at the foot of the blue ridge. It’s the most beautiful part of Virginia. Rolling hills, woods, and farms.
The landscape in the valley is harder. It’s not as lush, the soil is poorer, and you see more rock.

I heard half a million. But I have no way to judge the rumor. It’s just forum gossip.

I mean its a bad place academically but its has a good location, lots of parties, and has rabid fans for someone at that level. I go to WM but still get the fun of watching my friends love JMU
