i don't like his struggles with the spread and quite frankly the inability of UT to adapt to the changing college football world is what killed the fulmer reign. how much of that is shouldered by chavis, i am not sure, but i am not all excited about this

So you don't think Tennessee played good Defense in 08?

I already knew no one on Tigerdroppings would be happy once this was announced but man we sure are a hard group to please.

Chavis not adapting?

A proven DC that has shown he can be very successful and very loyal. What's not to like?

I'd love to keep the Hat, the Wizard, and the Chief for the next 15 years.

Coach O was not the problem, safeties were the biggest problem on defense. Ellis developed very well as a rookie and you have to give Coach O credit for that.
David was the problem and other teams knew it. Ellis' name was hardly called lately, not like he was the glue that stuck the defense together..
Gay and Harper werent terrible, hell id Harper could tackle better he would be great considering most plays ended up in the Saints backfield.
Vilma, Fujita, Shanle, Smith were all good, but there was a breakdown there somewhere.

Miles doesn't make poor DC choices, he's retarded.

More like Miles had brain surgery, tries to call timeouts to stop the clock after INTs, hired Malloryveto, tried to hire Bill Clay, flew to Dallas the night before the SECCG to beg to get into the Cotton Bowl when he loses the game the next day, can't form a coherent sentence, offered Rocky Duplesis, thought it better to run the ball with Justin Vincent than throw with JR and 3 stud NFL WRs against Auburn, took Scott out against Kentucky to protect Hester's feelings, etc etc --> he's retarded

quote:

Is it your position that the loss of a DT so talented he was taken in the 1st round despite playing 3 games his Sr. year had ZERO effect on TN's ability to stop the run? Or that having, say, 8 new starters in another year also did not affect TN's defensive ranking in any material way? That the ONLY explanation for these rankings is that Chavis sucks?

Is it your position that any number of injuries or young players completely excuses a DC from having a bunch of mediocre to shitty defenses and coming to Baton Rouge and putting on a purple hat will magically transfrom him into a great DC who actually tries to stop the oppositioin on 3rd and long?

quote:

I get the feeling that, like Groucho Marx who wouldn't join a club that would admit him as a member, you'd hate any DC Miles hired simply because it was Miles who hired him. And that's fine. But that doesn't excuse your refusal to acknowledge the potential reasons underlying the stats you keep quoting as evidence against Chavis.

Maybe you should search my posts about Walker, Koenning, or Edwards or even Tenuta then.

after bowl game. Unless Chicken can get tigerdroppings.com on the news and Miles feels pressured into announcing. But, Miles hasn't announced changes prior to a bowl game since he's been here. Don't see that changing.

I'd say 1/5 which is the first Monday after the bowl game.

Now we're cooking.

Is Steele right about the "12 walking boots" thing after the So. Carolina game? If so, how many of those were significant defensive players?

quote:

In '05 we played a ton of man, but in '06 and '07 we played a bunch of Cover 3 and Regular Cover 2.

We played a little more man this season, but not as much as '95-'05.

Is this Chavis' usual ploy, i.e. mostly man when he has the horses, and mostly zone when he doesn't? And does that affect his level of QB aggression, i.e. blitz more from man, less from zone?

quote:

That being said, I don't think they adjusted well early on in '07 as we got embarrassed vs. Cal, UF and Bama.

A common criticism is that Chavis won't adjust during halftime. How well founded is this as a legit criticism?

And last question. A friend who's a rabid UT guy told me that while Chavis is no softy, his players almost universally love him, and will "go to war for him" no matter what. Fair assessment?

no one would be happy? have you read the first few pages of this thread? there are many more people happy with this than unhappy. which is another reason i feel more comfortable with my feelings. usually, when TD disagrees with you, you are on the right path.

yes...he has battled with the spread offense his entire tenure at UT and while having some really good defensive lines and lb's his secondaries have been largely unimpressive
