So I was reading this article:

LINK

It mentions SHSU head coach KC Keeler as a potential candidate for the UTEP job.

After some more research, UTEP was paying Sean Kugler $515,332 which ranked 102nd nationally.

According to this article, Keeler makes $250,000 at SHSU.

So he'd double his salary, but be at a dead end job and probably fired in 3-5 years. Or he could just keep rolling in FCS.

What do you think?

Hard to make the leap from D-2 to D-1 and land a great job. Always easier to go back down than come up, worth a shot at being decent at Utep and setting your career to a higher level.

It's not like you won't be able to go back to a high level D-2 team if it doesn't work out

To hell with that! UTEP is a black hole for coaches. Stay at SHS and keep winning and he’ll land a CUSA or Sun Belt job. Maybe USA should take a look at him.

It’s the equivalent of Viator going from McNeese to ULM. Better pay, but a hell of a lot harder to win. But if you’re a Head Coach, you will likely have the confidence (overconfidence?) to think you can win anywhere. It’s the inherent thing that made them HC’s to begin with, instead of being lifetime coordinators.

I know nothing about each school. I don’t even know where Sam Houston is located at. I hope this helps.

Sometimes we get this image of a certain city or place in our head even though we have not been there.
I do not know the image you have of El Paso or that you have never spent time in the city but I am sure your thoughts are not totally correct.

El Paso is one of the few cities in the United States that is unmistakable. Santa Fe, New Orleans and San Francisco being the largest. El Paso has that same vibe to it.

It is actually a very modern American city that is developing faster than 80% of the United States.

Sam Houston St is Southland and UTEP is Conference USA?

I think they are CUSA. I do not think they are in the MWC where they belong.
El Paso is closer to Phoenix than Dallas in terms of distance. Very few players in Texas actually give the school any thought.
Still it is a better job than Sam Houston State.

Huntsville, Tx. If you think El Paso is horrible. Take a visit to the center of the Texas prison industry in East Texas.

Interestingly this is the same coach from Delaware about a decade ago who was getting some pub for the Michigan at one time.

He's right you know. FCS is allowed more scholarships to offer than DII schools are. No way NDSU beats some of those FBS schools like they did during their five year championship as a DII school.

Not disagreeing with you, but have you been to Huntsville? I guess you could live in The Woodlands or Conroe, but it's a shite town.

We're all aware that before they were FBS and FCS, they were Division 1A and Division 1AA, which was commonly misstated as "Division 2", which actually existed as a separate division.

Since we all agree and understand the misnomer, there is no need to point it out.
