it's not like there haven't been coaches out there who haven't had success without being a coordinator at one point.

yeah but they also had success as a head coach, pre-BCS

You are STRICTLY judging him on wins/losses.

naw

tech isn't that talented, and their top talent is from getting transfers from other schools

this created locker room problems and isn't a sustainable plan for program building

and he didn't even always succeed with his transfers. remember the QB from 2008? yowza

Dooley has upgraded facilities, upgraded the talent(had a lot of redshirts this year and transfers who were sitting out that will pay off next year and beyond), raised a shite-ton of money, put more people in the seats,

sounds like UTenn should have hired him as their AD, not HC

again those are all things easily done at an under dog program. Getting desperate people to buy into what you're selling isn't incredibly hard.

UT doesn't need a guy to come in and upgrade facilities, raise money, etc.

they need a very good coach to keep them from sinking into mediocrity.

they need a great recruiter with a national profile who can hire good coaches

If Dooley hires two top notch coordinators, he'll likely be fine. Problem is he had Scelfo (horrible coach now) as OC, and his DC at LaTech was mediocre.

I honestly think Tennessee needs to throw Chavis some serious dough to come back. He'd at least have much of the defense ahead of where they would be if another brand new coordinator came in. If they bring Dooley's DC from Tech, they may have a huge drop-off on both sides of the ball.

I don't see Dooley as much different than Dabo Swinney at Clemson, he had them in the ACCCG in his first year.

Would UT fans be more excited over hiring Miles or Dooley?

If its all relative, you can't forget that the year before Sweeny took over the team had been picked as a pre-season Top 10 team and favored to win the conference. They imploded in 2008, but not because of talent.

Then Sweeny came in and took em as a 5 loss team in a horrible conference to their conference championship. Their division was horrible too.

Tennessee on the other hand was 5-7 in 2008 and 7-6 in 2009. People weren't expecting their talent alone to carry them this year. The other thing was they brought in a new guy to run their team rather than promoting from within.

Also, I fail to see a Heisman candidate on the Tennessee team next year like Clemson had this past season.

True story Les won as many games in 2007 as Dooley did in WAC play over three years. Anybody more excited by Dooley isn't living in reality. Proven coach with issues > Completely unproven coach with no track record

the east may be comparable to ACC standards next year...I'm just saying he is similar to Swinney and should do pretty well. He should recruit well and hire good assistants. His dad is probably an all-time top 15-20 coach. I'm not expecting him to win the Bryant award next year.
