Is Herman a risk to jump to NFL?

Would that possibly make LSU look for someone else? It would suck to have Herman 5 years, like Saban, then he leaves us high and dry.

Some coaches don't want to coach in the NFL. Let's hope Herman is one of them

Noone really knows for sure but that is the belief.
The way the Texans are going it may be an opportunity sooner rather than later.

The list of top tier coaches that dont want/havent coached in the NFL is very short
I mean Urban Meyer and Urban Meyer? He seems like the only coach that would never go

Herman is young enough that he would be a risk to jump anywhere IMO. He's only been a head coach for 2 years, so we have no idea what kind of coach he would be. Maybe he wants to be a lifer at a top tier program, but for all we know he could be a Harbaugh type that likes to jump around.

Not really many make the transition to the NFL. Kelly is the only one that I can think of who is still in the league.

There is a pile of college coaches who failed int he NFL
and a lot of good ones who just never went.
Herman runs a very college offense, and has never played or coached in the NFL.
Saban was not only a DC, but Bill fricking Belichick's DC. So an NFL jump made a lot of sense when he showed himself to be a super capable college coach.
But if you are a college coach who thrives on control, the NFL isn't for you.
and a lot of good ones who just never went.

Bob Stoops and Mack Brown weren't in the NFL either. Neither were Bobby Bowden and Frank Beamer. Urban Meyer hasn't and Jim Tressel first time doing something for the NFL was as a consultant after he was fired from Ohio St.
Herman could build LSU as a dynasty for a long time and the impact would spread farther than just the football program.

I don't get why this worries so many people. If we get a guy and he leaves for the NFL, that just tells me they hired the right guy because if the NFL is coming for him then he's gotten the program back to where it belongs.
No NFL team came after Les. They came after Saban. If they came after Herman, then so be it. I'm not letting that dictate who I want here.

Herman isn't an NFL coach. His offense would last about 6 games.

Pete Carroll. He's headed to the hall of fame with a college title and a Lombardi Trophy. I don't care what any of you say, the pinnacle of American football is a Super Bowl. Putting LSU's two NC's next to the Saints' Super Bowl and there's virtually no comparison which one garnered more excitement and lore. I would be amazed if Herman didn't make the jump one day but if LSU can get him for a few years and build on it, we should take it.

OK, I forgot about Carroll. But let's be honest, not many college HC's make it in the pros. Far fewer excel there. As far as its every HC's dream to coach in the pros it isn't true.

Pete Carroll was also an NFL HC coach twice before he ever stepped foot at USC.

you gotta remember, Carroll had had one college coaching job in the early 80's at Pacific. he was a pro guy. The ONLY reason he took the SC job was because he had zero NFL offers at the time. Carroll was staying at SC until the pro's came calling. He could brush up his resume at SC. it wasnt like Carroll was a college genius and decided to give the pros a chance like John McKay did. He was an NFL guy from the word go and had spent way more years in pro ball.
As far as I know herman doesnt have much pro background so he's probably a Coach K, John Wooden, Bobby Knight, Saban, Bryant, Darrell royal, Spurrier, Bud Wilkinson guy who believes college is his calling.
Despite what Cowherd says, not every coach has the ultimate goal of being an NFL coach.

IMO the sky is the limit for Herman. At his age he could come to LSU have great success and if his goal is to coach at the highest level in the NFL, after 5 years he could be in the pros by age 46/47. Again if that is his ultimate fulfillment in his career.
