If Florida and Nebraska are any indication of what Michigan will do they

will make an underwhelming hire and it will not be Les Miles.
Have any 2 major programs hired such head scratching decisions in such a short period of time.
I am not ready to say the McElwain was a bad hire but I thought Florida would shoot a little higher than him.
Riley left the Saints for OSU because he was a northwest guy.....now he is headed to the midwest. I just can't see him being anything other than a .500 coach at NEB.
If these 2 hires are any indication does Michigan settle for mid-major coach or another ho-hum hire or do they have to make a statement with their hire?

McElwain is a great hire. Riley isn't terrible either, but he is then same coach as Pellini, minus the a-hole-ness.

If pelini wasn't an a-hole that hated his own fans, would he have been fired this season?

Yep Riley is a good coach but I don't see him doing much better then Pelini did.

Fans always think their college program is elite and one of the absolute best jobs in the country. They are dumbfounded when they realize coaches may not share the same sentiment.
HC's now are making a ton of money at some relatively and historically mediocre programs. Kirk Ferentz and (now) Hugh Freeze come to mind. There is very little reason for a great well established coach to leave a comfortable and secure situation for another job. That's why all the hires have been so "underwhelming". They're only underwhelming because fans' expectations are so high.
I don't think anyone feels USC and Texas made "slam dunk" hires last season.
LSU fans beware. Yes Miles has his issues, but it's unlikely that the next HOF coach is sitting out there just waiting until the LSU job opens up.

I honestly want Miles but here are a few people that I could see coming that I would be ok with.
Chris Peterson (washington)
Cutcliffe (Duke)
Freeze (ole Miss)?? not sure long shot perhaps
Mora (ucla)

My point is, based on lack of rumors from the media, both Neb and Florida made rather quick hires.
IMO that means they were the only coaches offered the job or both schools did a great job of keeping any leaks from getting out.

I doubt either guy was the #1 candidate for each school. However, I suspect the AD's contacted the agents of the first names on their list and received information that those guys weren't interested. With recruiting in full swing there's no use to sit around and wait for your "dream date" to have a change of heart. Might as well lock in the best guy who wants the job now and give him a chance to put together his staff and hit the recruiting trail ASAP

Not sure Pelini was fired primarily for on field reasons the arse hole stuff and calling out the fan base the AD, etc had worn thin.

Yeah Petrino was one hell of a get, too bad Arkansas wasn't able to follow that up with a good longterm coach.
