I don't see how Auburn cannot fire Malzahn at this point

The damage has been done. What recruit in their right mind would want to go play for a coach that is all but guaranteed to be fired a year later? Opposing coaches would pick off every 4 and 5 star commitment with ease.

Eerily similar to LSU and miles post 2015.

thats why the whole restructured buyout was stupid
negotiate a cheaper buyout then the contract calls for if you want but its beyond stupid to agree to be a lame duck coach who cant recruit because its assured you will be fired next year with anything short of a NC

Yep. This is Les Miles all over again. Hopefully our boosters realize this and pony up now while we can still salvage two recruiting classes.
Otherwise, we're going to be wondering in the wilderness for the next 4-5 years at least. We can't rebound as easily as LSU can without having an in-state talent pool like Louisiana.

Wasn’t he basically gone last year before beating Bama?

Yes, had we lost that game he was going to be fired and go to Arkansas.

that's a lot of money to pay in 30 days

Gus should of told them to go to hell. They are sabotaging his recruiting season by starting lies about going after Stoops. “Sorry Auburn, you gonna pay me every red cent”.

There are two reasons for keeping Malzahn:
1.) A $49 million buyout, with $32 million due within 30 days of termination;
2.) Jimmy F. Sexton.
The only way Auburn negotiates the buyout down is if Jimmah has their next coach behind Door #2. And that will be more expensive in the end.
I mean, how stupid was it to allow an egghead university president to negotiate a deal with Sexton?

On top of that, he agreed to restrictions on personnel and their salaries. He's basically hamstrung as the coach from making any new hires that cost more money, and he's agreed to take a smaller buyout if he gets fired?
This whole thing is just odd.

That buyout, wow. And LSU fans thought Alleva was a moron.

If I was a coach, I wouldn't have a buyout. If the school want to fire me and there is $25m left on the contract, I want my full 25.

I actually feel bad for Auburn on this one. That was a really stupid arrangement their Athletic Department just inked.
We LSU fans understand that holding off a year on something you should do now, can and will set your program back three or more years.
Watching administrations make the same mistake over and over again is just fascinating.

The only reason this is any better than LSU circa 2015 is because there aren't any great HC candidates out there this year. (Stoops aint going to auburn) LSU could have had Jimbo or Herman or a lot of other options in 2015. Waited too long and then had to compete with Texas and other programs for coaches and priced ourselves out of the Jimbo sweepstakes.
I kinda think Kiffin is destined to go to Auburn at some point. He's just sleezy enough to interest them and would be great having him agitate Saban year round.

No. He'd just blownout #1 UGA. That's the game that saved him. The Bama win got him the extension.
