Well how do we determine the winner? Get Ed and Les in the same room, and come up with a square peg round hole game, and see you completes it in the fastest time.

kiffin is just using that same thing with the QB in the shotgun more and allowing the QB to run

bama has used heavy shotgun-single back formations for years now. back to when McElwain was the OC there.

If you were to pinpoint what kind of philosophy Saban has offensively it is not the offense we see today.

mammoth OL running a man blocking scheme
power rushing in the middle 2 gaps
short passing and WR screens, esp early on
use b/c to set up big passing plays

that's the same shite he's been doing since LSU, except the one year under applewhite

what he's done is become more horizontal with more TE use and now a running option for the QB

saban adds more wrinkles with new OCs every 2-3 years

hell, what KIFFIN is running now isn't what he's run for almost his entire career

Because Les was an offensive minded coach. O is not, so it'll be Kiffin's free rein offense.

No Les does not have a superior football IQ to Ed nor any other LSU football coach I have observed over the last say 3 decades other than Curly Hallman I give you that one.

Gonna disagree here; part of the Mad Hatter talk was Les Miles having a good feel of the game, and making the right big call at the right time.

The Hester 4th down runs vs Florida; the fake FGs vs South Carolina and Florida; the Auburn TD pass; the Alabama TE reverse; JJ read option at Bama; hell, he ran a fake punt early against Arizona St when they didn't cover the gunner, and that was DEEP inside the 20. Those plays worked.

Orgeron hasn't shown that feel yet. Guice and Fournette have been stuffed on short yardage- even vs Missouri in the first half. Had that been vs a better team, it could have cost us big.

It's painfully obvious it didn't matter who was running the offense under les, it wasn't changing. O, by all accounts, let's his guys coach.

I don't think either approach is optimal.

You can't constantly interfere with your coordinators to the point where they aren't really doing their jobs. Also, you can't just "let your coaches coach" with no input at all. If they were experienced enough to do it without any guidance they'd be head coaches themselves.

O won't meddle.

He'll stand on the sidelines, cheer and slap asses, and let his coordinators and position coaches do their jobs.

And, if they do well, we reap the benefits.

+++++++++++++++++++

BTW...Ole Miss was over a decade ago and he's had success since (and had admitted he screwed up and learned from those mistakes). What say we let the guy actually:

a) coach his bowl game
b) hire his coaches and coordinators (and get rid of the detritus)
c) have a recruiting class
d) have a Spring practice
e) have a Summer/Fall camp
f) coach a fricking season...just one

before we call him a failure and tear up our tickets?

The one thing ill give O credit for is he has specifically stated he did this at Ole Miss. So he has obviously learned from his past.

Don't forget if we do actually make a couple runs O will be demanding higher pay (as he should), but that will lead us back to going cheaper for coordinators.

this is what I see happening.. To me it would be the ultimate red flag.. He was given the chance of a lifetime and he should always remember that, plus he was hired on the premise that his coordinators are basically everything.. that will never change under him, nor should his contract. He said he wanted what was best for LSU, whats best for LSU is absolutely 0$ on a buyout, he should never have a buyout, ever... his coordinators (if they are great), should have huge buyouts to to other universities.. But Orgerons pay should not go over 3.5 million... ever... I think we are overpaying at 3 million...

might seem to be, but actually, no

New defensive coordinator, the defense naturally improved over the course of the season.

Miles made the move to Etling and promoted Chark before he left. He wouldn't get any credit for their continued development, but he did see the need to bring them up.

Orgeron has made one significant roster move, that was to bury the defensive lineman that disrespected Pete Jenkins. You could say he mishandled the RB spot; he let Fournette play when he wasn't ready, he left Guice on the bench against Alabama, he left Guice on the field for almost 40 carries against A&M.

well to be fair, he was playing politics once he got the interim tag and he knew the big knock on Miles was meddling. publicly, if he wanted to win over the fanbase, he had to completely shite on that aspect of Miles or he'd never have a shot for his coup

Won't give him credit for anything. I can't wait for next season it's going to be interesting indeed.

I gave him credit earlier for allowing Ensminger to go the duration of 60 min. with Guice only having 2 carries in the Bama game.

so you don't think the best determining factor in who has the better football iq would be to compare how the team they both coached fared?

If you're asking if O will have the same type of success that Miles had his first 3 years, then no.

Miles inherited Sabans lines on both sides of the ball and a couple good college QBs.

O has to finish building the Dline and rebuild the Oline. Also has to find a QB to run whatever system.

well to be fair, Saban didn't leave Miles with an elite OL
