Not trying to be disrespectful. Seriously, I think it's a really good question. He is obviously interviewing for other jobs right now to be a head coach and hasn't landed one. Purdue didn't want him. He didn't make the final 3 for the Houston gig either. I already knew that he couldn't talk very well. In an interview, you have to sell yourself. Leave an impression. After listening to him talk for 10 plus years I don't see how he ever lands a job that requires an interview.

Because Saban dicked us out of the "hot" coaches at the time, and he was the best available.

For the most part, it wasn't the worst hire we could have made. Thanks for the memories, Les but here's to the future!

He had a better record at OSU than Jimmy Johnson did and was already known as a good recruiter. It was a matter of time before he landed a bigger job.

Skip knew he had a loaded gun & he wanted someone who would be here long term to fire it. Like him or not Les was everything Saban wasn't: he was humble, he wasnt money hungry, he loved the idea of being at LSU just because & wanted long term stability for his family.
The podcast Skip did on the search really is fascinating. Not just for his insights on the Les hire & dealing with Saban but it will give you an idea of how shitty a job Alleva did with this search.

Correct. Skip flat out said he wanted a family man that would stick around. Nailed it

Saban waiting a long time to tell us he was going to the NFL

Urban and Spurrior took other jobs

He wasn't amazing at OSU, but OSU was fricking terrible before he got there.

1 bowl since Barry Sanders was there.

Les turned around a gutter program at OSU and beat OU a couple of times. He was/is a great recruiter and knew how to manage a program well.

He did those things very well at LSU, he just was too stubborn on one side of the ball and became outdated. However, he left our program in excellent shape for the next regime.

Then we hired Ed Orgeron.

Call me crazy but I think Les may have been given the LSU job because he was a great coach; and then he went on to prove that correct by leading LSU through its winning-est decade of football in program history.

He did win 81% of his games over 11 season and played in 2 National Title games, Won 1, the other was a loss after perfect season 13-0.... defeating the national champion earlier in the year.

Most coaches never sniff that level of success...

skip hired him because he had best feel for him providing stability to the program on short notice

Les got the job because he had a resume that mostly resembled Saban's pre-LSU career. Both Saban and Miles:

-had NFL experience (Les had a bried stint as TE coach w/ Dallas)
-had success at a school considered little brother in their state
-had been head coaches in major conference

That and as others have said, Skip liked that Les had small kids and might be looking to stay for a while. LSU was a little tired of the wait and see at the end of every season to see if Nick was leaving for the NFL.

This is absolute, positive fact. 100 percent why he was targeted.

If you look at some of the high-profile hires, they all have that NFL experience, which was the flavor of the month at that time. Everybody was looking for the next Nick Saban/Pete Carroll/Kirk Ferentz, and that's a fact:

LSU: Les Miles
Notre Dame: Charlie Weis
Syracuse: Greg Robinson
Pitt: Dave Wannstedt
