for the programs that just "have to " have a proven coach at a large school the costs are through the roof. and don't forget the buy outs of present staff and probably the buy out of the new coach and the quickly rising costs of quality assistants.

what amazes me is what the alumni will put up with cost wise. it is they that pay for this; not the college.

Coaches in college have a huge impact on how much the team wins and there are more programs capable of greatness than there are coaches who can deliver it. As such there is a premium on that skill set.

You make a valid point. The HC arms race is out of control. I suspect that this was taken into consideration when Alleva hired the CEO instead of going back out and soliciting another candidate. It might turn out to be a brilliant decision.

Either football or basketball are the money earning sports for Athletic Departments that turn out tens of millions of dollars in profit each year. Of course that's going to put a premium on the person running those programs.

i'm with you.

had season tickets for years but gave them up and do not regret it. the experience got too expensive and too much hassle. it's like a hobby.

it's not actually

coaches have the leverage so they are getting paid. nothing wrong with that at all.

yeah, okay. brilliant in a short sighted bean counter way but not on the field. I bet you loved Joe Dean.

Not really insane at all. It's called the market price.

Yep. There was nothing brilliant with what Alleva did. Not only did he make a knee-jerk reactionary decision after losing out on his top candidates, he overpaid O compared to his market value.

There is a difference in getting into a bidding war with other programs over a highly desired coach and getting into a bidding war with your self for a coach without any other suitors.

When you don’t have to pay the players, you can afford to pay the coaches

What happens to those salaries (heavily supported by the contracts the schools have with ESPN) when the ESPN bubble deflates even further>
