..and then gone on to have a successful career in the SEC--by success I mean national championships, consistent top ten finishes etc?

Neyland? Bryant? Saban? Spurrier?

Has any coach been fired from an SEC school and then come back after a 10-year layoff to have a successful career as defined above?

I'll hang up and listen.

Hang up and listen to this....
Not every coach (or person for that matter) has had the same path to success... sometimes failing can be the biggest catalyst to having a successful life and/or career

Not saying O is or isn't right for the job, I'm just saying, not everyone comes out and dominates life from the jump... sometimes a little learning and strife can go a long way... unfortunately experience is something we get after we don't need it anymore

I get not everyone looks like a winner from the get go.

My question is has anyone EVER done it? In the 100+ year history of college football in the SEC, has anyone ever gone from shite to The Sugar Bowl? Consistently?

And not talking about Dan Mullen level of success.

O took over a dumpster fire roster with no talent at Ole Miss. It was built for Eli and once he left, it fell off. He rebuilt it and didn't reap the rewards. Nutt did. And I would argue that he planted seeds that the current regime is still reaping rewards from considering that Freeze was on O's staff. I am not advocating for him to stay but to rebuild a program vs maintain a program are 2 different things.

He goes 8-0 or even 7-1 the rest of the way and the job is his. That is the only record that will matter. That would put him at 14-2 or 13-3 over his last 16 games coached at real football schools

He didn't start his career in the SEC but Gene Stallings had a horrible record at Texas A&M (27-45-1 overall record, 19-30 conference record) and ended up having a great coaching career at Alabama. But yeah it's pretty rare for a coach to start off terribly and then end up having a successful coaching career.

its kind of amazing that youre asking about a very specific scenario and then strutting around as if that makes some point.

this board honestly has some of the dumbest fricking people on earth on it.

That's a nice motivational poster. But can you give one example of a coach absolutely sucking in a conference, and then magically becoming great in that conference after a decade of being a positional coach? That's the question posed in the OP.

Belichick went 36-44 with the Browns including 5-11 in his last year when he was fired. He's 190-70 with the Patriots and won 4 super bowls.

Is magic a requirement? Because magic isn't real outside of Quick Change.

Your OP question is dumb. Any other details specific to Ed Orgeron you want to add in so we can search for this identical situation to serve as precedence? Same height/weight? What conference does he need to be a positional coach? SEC or any other power 5? When you say "decade" do you mean exactly 10 years no more, no less or is that an estimate? What about age? What age does he "sulk" vs what age does he begin to be successful? Are we talking modern era football only?

You really need to fine tune your question IMO.

First of all Belichick starts with a "B" not an "O" so the situations really aren't comparable. Also the NFL, not the SEC (SEC is much harder). Belichick was not a position coach, he was a coordinator (again NFL, not SEC). Browns are in Cleveland and have a completely different mascot than Ole Miss (dog vs. plantation owner); same thing on the Patriots - Patriots are people and tigers are tigers. Totally different.

Almost forgot - OP said SUGAR bowls and you reference SUPER bowls. I'm assuming just a misread on your part.

I don't know if I buy that Speedy.

At 8-0, he'd be 14-2 as an interim coach--that includes no sample size of preparing a team for a bowl game, spring football, fall camp and everything that goes with it--off season issues, etc. It includes, taking over a very talented team and injecting it with some "energy", that's not the same as being a head coach for several years.

That 14-2 record would also include a 35-14 loss to cross town rival UCA to end the season.

It's not a specific scenario--I opened this up to the entire history of the SEC. I'm not strutting--I asked a question. Is there a precent for a coach turning things around--or would this be the first time in history?

Although, I agree, your post provides ample evidence for your 2nd argument.

Are you serious?
David Cutcliff Had winning record (44-29) at Ole Miss and after dropping in class has continued to be a mediocre coach at Duke (50-56)

Bill Belicheck Although not in the SEC, BB is a good call, although he at least went to the playoffs and won with the Browns (11-5) --that's a helluva lot different than 3-21

Pete Caroll Pete Carroll was 27-21 and went to PLAYOFFS TWICE with New England. You think that's comparable to what Orgeron did at Ole Miss??? I hope LSU is a little more thorough than you in the job search.

Hayden Frye Are you kidding me?? Although Frye's record was terrible at SMU, he at least had two winning seasons. Then he was 40-23 at North Texas State before going to Iowa. But he's way below the kind of coach LSU should be hiring now.

Rich Rodriguez WTF??? Rich Rod was 43-28 at Glenvile State and 60-26 at WVU to start off his career. How does this in any way relate to the original question.

Jim Harbaugh
Harbaugh started off his career 29-6 at San Diego State. You could immediately tell he was a winner. He didn't have to say oh I made some mistakes...blah, blah. Go frick yourself.

Skip Holtz Skip Holtz??? frick off. You want him as head coach for LSU. Sign him to a lifetime contract with the stipulation that you have to watch every game. He also started off his career as a winner a UConn (34-23) and ECU (38-27).

Jim Caldwell Good god. Started off abysmal (26-63) at Wake Forest. Has reached deep within himself to become mediocre (45-38) in the pros. That's what you want for LSU?

So the answer to the original question is ABSOLUTELY FRICKING NO. No one in college football, and certainly the SEC has started out abysmal and gone on to be the kind of dominant championship coach that all of you seem to want. But let O go 6-2 and maybe it'll happen for the first time in history.

I hope not. But if so, you get what you deserve.
