Technically, Mike coached under Arnsparger, though Archer was the DC in '86. I've said all along, he'd be a great hire, being a well respected DC, and former NFL HC.

I'm going to guess that it's Vic Fangio.

My reasoning:

He has known Jim Harbaugh since at least 2008 when Jim's brother John became HC in Baltimore. He was Special Assistant to HC/Defense/LBs (2006–2010) + he was Jim's DC at Stanford and followed him to S.F.

So they probably discussed the pros & cons of going back to the college ranks.

Connection to Miles via Harbaugh/Michigan.

Reason for all the secrecy he wants the HC job at S.F. and doesn't want to jeopardize that so they are waiting until he is officially passed over for the S.F. job.

His resume well he was DC at the Panthers, Colts, Texans, Ravens and Stanford. But the part of his resume I like best is this.

quote:

New Orleans Saints' linebackers coach (1986–1994) where he oversaw the Dome Patrol era of outstanding linebacker play

This is all just mental masturbation on my part, I know nothing.

You guys are overlooking the most obvious coach who lives in North Carolina.

It's Bill Cowher, guys.

COWHER POWER!

I need to stop reading your posts, man. This is the second time in 3 days that you've completely sold me on a candidate. You should go into marketing if you haven't already.

A poster previously suggested McDermott, and this was the response

Les is keeping this search quieter than an coaching search I've ever seen. It's almost like he's intentionally telling people disinformation.

None of us have any idea, but why would he come back to college he hasn't coached college since 1980?

Not bashing your guess its as good as any. I was the first that guessed that it was Ron Zook, but that wasn't because I knew anything. Me and buddy were talking about the criteria we had heard was being thrown around. Heard Matt Mascona's show a few days ago. He was saying that if you look at the last 5 years or so all of the hires Miles had made all had 2 things in common. NFL or SEC experience or a combo of both. We also assumed that since a hire had not been made that the target or targets must still be coaching this season. Using this the only name we came up with was Zook. He is alive in the playoffs with the packers. He is only a assistant to the special teams coach so you would assume he would want a more important position than that. That's a entry level job not a job for a established coach. He has all of what you want. Now it looks like we were wrong Have we missed something with Crennel? Almost always their is a connection, what is the connection here?

Good morning. So it's Saturday now and nothing has leaked. Maybe after tonight and Carolina is done? Maybe tomorrow night if the Cowboys pull off a w? Maybe Monday after the championship game? Jeez this is taking forever.

I guess I'll stay on team Elko until something else contradicts it.

Same as you... just trying to put the pieces together. After McDermott, who apparently isn't the guy who's been named, Crennel makes the most sense to me as a "shocking" hire. That and the Texans aren't exactly a breakthrough team for 2015.

Could it be Del Rio? His wife is from Louisiana, daughter went to LSU... His hire would qualify as one that would shock and be a home run...

Why would leave a rock solid NFL job to move down to the college level? He has had a strong interest in the LSU head job for a long time, so why come as a DC? That's a huge stretch IMO. Only thing I come up with is that he wants to replace Miles when he retires. I am not buying Del Rio. I have to give major props to Miles and Company, they sure have us all chasing our tails.

Two issues with Crennel. One, he's 67. Two, I don't see any connections to Miles.

He's from the South (Virginia), played in the South (Western Kentucky), and coached at Ole Miss in the late 70's, but that's about it.
