His track record as OC (total offense nationally)
2015 Tulsa 13th
2016 Texas 16th
2017 South Florida 6th

Played QB and has coached QBs his whole career.

I would be excited about Gilbert as long as it happens and he gets free reign

Gilbert previously served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under head coach Charlie Strong at Texas during the 2016 season and previously held positions as co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Tulsa (2015), Bowling Green (2014) and Eastern Illinois (2012-13). Gilbert's last four offenses at four different universities have posted a combined average of 505.3 yards and 36.8 points per game, producing 304.3 yards per game through the air and 200.9 yards per game on the ground.

Gilbert's Texas offense ranked 17th in the nation and second in the Big 12 in rushing, posting 239.3 yards per game on the ground, and was 16th nationally and fifth in the Big 12 averaging 491.3 total yards per game. Longhorn running back D'Onta Foreman became just the 28th player in FBS history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season.

And why would anyone think he's going to be given free reign?

I think he was a co-oc at Tulsa(not 100% sure) but at Texas and South Florida it was all him. He fits all the checklists on what we need in an OC.

-recruiting connections in Texas
-QB developer
-runs spread with power run schemes
-balanced offense
-young and hungry

I'll take him. Could be a potentially great hire on the recruiting front too since he's young and has his connections in Texas and maybe now Florida? 2 hot beds for LSU in recruiting.

And he's only making $100K at USF. Should be an easy hire if TPTB want him - and they should.

Does Mattox come with him? Those two have been together at almost every stop.

I agree that he would be a great hire. I've been wanting to see LSU run an actual spread offense for a long time and if they bring him in then that's obviously the direction they want to take, or at least I would hope that's the direction they would want to take because both of the candidates that have had serious consideration so far have been power spread guys.

I think that's an offense that everyone can be happy with. It doesn't take away the run game that has been LSU's bread and butter but it will likely highly improve our passing attack and that's what we've been sorely missing as everyone knows for past 10 years.

Believe me I'm skeptical we've been through this song and dance for close to a decade now

Gilbert > Briles

But the rational posters that avoided this board for the last 24-48 hours knew that already.

Four years he's run his own show. Four years of meddling in offense. Just saying.

But this summer all we'll hear is "he's learned from his mistakes."

But I do like the idea of this hire. Hopefully he'll stay on when Orgeron's gone.

So Charlie Strong a defensive coach, hired Gilbert at Texas and chose to hire him again at USF. That says a lot about what Strong thinks about Gilbert's offense.

And both of those offenses were top 15 nationally.

I like Gilbert. If left to run his offense with the athletes we have, it could be very good.

He does run a fast, not Chip Kelly fast, but certainly up tempo fast.

O refused to let Canada run up tempo. Will he allow Gilbert if hired!

Again I like him but whomever we hire has to be given a chance to run “his” offense.

If Gilbert is smart, he'll ask both O and Canada what were their differences.
