This looks like it could be a really good hire. Two NFL guys on the defensive staff (Coach O and Edwards) and if Corey Raymond coaches DB's, that's another coach with NFL playing experience.

Stout.

I understand that the NFL is not college and they are different games, but I doubt that Edwards would not be able to adapt. He'd have credibility with recruits, that's for sure.

I'd like to know more about him, but this could be a good thing.

the rant will approve because he worked for Saban. They say they hate Saban but deep down they're still in love.

here's a better background.

-He started off as a GA at UF
-That Redskins defense was 14th in the NFL-middle of the pack
-Seems to be a Dave Campo protege' so the Miles tie makes sense since Miles and Campo are supposedly big pals

Campo's potato salad is legendary.

well at least we'll go for small, quick LBs now

*ETA: i just realized that he's been coaching the 3-4 the past couple years and his greatest year was when lavar went to the pro bowl...when they used him as a DE for at least half of his year...i wonder if he retains the 4-3 now

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- The Washington Redskins will make linebackers coach George Edwards their fifth defensive coordinator in as many years.

Edwards replaces Marvin Lewis, who became the new head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday.

Redskins head coach Steve Spurrier confirmed Edwards' promotion late Tuesday to reporters in Mobile, Ala., where he is scouting practices for the Senior Bowl. Spurrier had long hinted that Edwards would be his choice if Lewis left, and several players had lobbied publicly for Edwards because they didn't want to learn yet another new defensive system.

Edwards follows Mike Nolan, Ray Rhodes, Kurt Schottenheimer and Lewis in the yearly turnover of defensive coordinators since Dan Snyder bought the Redskins in 1999.

Lewis was made the highest-paid assistant in the league when he was hired last year, but the team didn't expect him to stay long because he was a perennial head coaching candidate.

Edwards is expected to keep Lewis' schemes intact. The defense had a steep learning curve under Lewis early in the season, but it rallied to finish fifth in the league in yards allowed by year's end.

"I think George Edwards should be the clear-cut choice," linebacker LaVar Arrington said the day after the season ended. "He's the most qualified. I'm confident we'll be able to keep the system in place."

Edwards played for Spurrier at Duke in the 1980s and was on Spurrier's coaching staff at Florida in the 1990s. He spent four seasons as the Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach before Spurrier brought him to the Redskins last year.

hopefully he learned some DC shite from Marvin

Do we have an origin of where Edwards' name is re-surfacing?

I would be surprised by this hire. I would have thought that experience as a DC would have been the major priority.

As far as the possibility of CR being the DB coach, I would be even more surprised by this. He has no experience as a position coach, and if the secondary fails this season, Miles opens himself up to the same criticisms he has seen this year. I'm sure Corey is very capable, I just don't see either of them accepting the risk at this point.

this speaks volumes, regardless if some of you are "excited" about this possible hire.

the origin as far back as we can trace it is just several posters on pay boards

The only way i could see Raymond as DB coach was if Walker or another DB guy came in. I think you need a veteran coach there for sure.

well if the hypothetical timeline i listed above is accurate, then we'd lose chavis (Due to choice) and walker (due to NMSU hiring him). the next rumored guy in line would be edwards. i never though tenuta was seriously considered

is Mallory definitely going to New Mexico? He could be the guy for the DB coach which may not be a bad deal. That may lead to a chemistry issue though.

Although he has never been a coordinator, Edwards’ pedigree is strong. After playing for Spurrier at Duke, and serving as a graduate assistant (also with Spurrier) at Florida, Edwards spent four years as an assistant at Appalachian State and one year each at Duke and Georgia before joining the Cowboys’ staff, where he spent the four years previous to coming to Washington. Last season was his first with the Redskins. He has previously turned down offers from Florida and Georgia to be those schools’ defensive coordinators.

quote:

Edwards says some of his biggest influences have been coaches he worked with in Dallas — Dave Campo (now Cleveland’s defensive coordinator), Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey, and Jim Bates, who runs the Dolphins’ defense. And, of course, Lewis.

I'll be on board with just about anyone who will come in and take charge.

All these guys need is some coaching and accountability.

I am not for Mallory on staff in any capacity. Not so much a knock on him as a DB coach. I just don't want any returning players to have any reason not to accept personal responsibility. I really don't want to hear anymore about parents of players complaining on their behalf, rightfully so or not.
