Yeah, I can see how ND vs Army or ND vs N.C. State will trump LSU vs Fla, A&M, and Alabama

the appeal of notre dame is clear even though i despise them. they have a significantly easier path to the playoffs, and if it matters, there is the tie-in of the notre dame HC being from Cincinnati (probably doesnt matter).

i really want this guy. hope LSU is able to reel him in and close the deal.

How many National Championships does O have?

How great is O with people?

When is the last time Notre Dame won a national Championship?

I wouldn’t count O out. Too many factors involved.

It's going to be embarrassing if we lose out on an elite DC to Notre Dame.

Lots of posters in this thread seem to be forgetting (or ignoring) that Notre Dame was in the playoffs THIS SEASON. Acting like they can't achieve success on the same - or nearly the same - level as LSU is just coming off as disengenuous.

ND is certainly a national brand and a "household name" even though they've wandered in the wilderness for a few years up until 2020. But let's not act like the path to the playoffs is crazy difficult there or that they can't recruit top athletes, it's actually tougher at LSU at both.

I agree that LSU and SEC money/exposure should give y'all a leg up in the Freeman Sweepstakes, but O's seat is also a little hot. Kelly's isn't at all, in fact he just took his team to a new height this very year.

I *think* he'll ultimately choose LSU, but the race will be a LOT tighter than what some of y'all are making it out to be.

I understand we're shitting on Notre Dame vis a vis LSU and can't imagine why he would choose Notre Dame but if you look at it objectively, you can see why there might be some real appeal to him...

Born in Huber Heights, Ohio
Played at Ohio State
GA at Ohio State
Linebackers at Kent State
CO-DC at Purdue
DC at Cincinnati

Basically his whole life has happened in Ohio and Indiana. South Bend is about 4 hours from Huber Heights and Cincinnati. Thats manageable distance from friends and family and keeps him in established recruiting footprints. If you remember that this is likely a 1 to 2 year stop before he gets a HC job, Notre Dame might be high on his list.

O needs to wear his natty ring into the meeting and make sure it's on the hand that he uses to shake hands with

O can make up for whatever deficiencies he has by flashing last years fricking rings. Rings that Kelly is just as far from today as he’s ever been. We just watched that movie this weekend.

He has no ties to South Louisiana. If he comes here he gets to learn how to recruit new Orleans one of the richest areas in the county for recruits.

Don’t kid yourself. That was 20 years ago. OSU owns the Midwest and Clemson, Bama, LSU and others dominate the south.

Until they break through the ceiling and at least play a competitive playoff game, what good is that path?

May want to do a little research on that, friend. Odom is staying with his buddy Pittman it seems.

Besides, I wasn't trying to rain on anyone's parade; just injecting a dose of reality from someone outside the situation into this thread.

Freeman very well may end up at LSU, and if most of us were in his shoes we'd certainly choose LSU and the SEC. But there are a lot of factors at play, and not all of them are in LSU's favor. It's not the end of the world if he chooses elsewhere, there's a few good DC names out there that LSU could land fairly easily - much easier than landing a big name OC at this juncture

His good friend just gave an interview yesterday on local BR radio. He commented that his family has a strong Catholic background.

He’ll be going to Notre Dame and O will be left empty handed after proclaiming on radio today that Freeman is his number 1, so other guys commit to staying put where they are.

LSU has all the advantages for the exception of geography.

LSU is a easier place to recruit and get talent. Talent makes coaches.

LSU pays top dollar for assistant coaches.

LSU is a national brand holding the most N.C. Titles outside of bama since 2000.

LSU is in the most competitive and recognized conference outside the nfl.

When you succeed, and it’s easier at LSU due to talent advantage, you become a head coach.

And LSU, the defending champs, went 5-5 this year and fired/removed both of their coordinators - the DC after one season.

I think any coach with confidence in their ability looks at the situations pretty evenly. On one hand, you can come in and "right the ship" at LSU and continue a push to make it to the playoffs and championship. On the other hand, you can be the "difference maker" at ND and give them that last little push to get over the hump that they were missing this year.

It really comes down to how he gels with the HCs and how he sees the future. Another bad or mediocre season and O could easily be fired, even IF his defense performs lights out and improves. He even slightly improves ND, and they're making a run in the playoffs again and Kelly's job is safe for the foreseeable future

There’s way too much psychoanalyzing going on in this thread. Freeman at DC is a 1-2 year commitment tops. He wants an HC job and will take the school that will get him there the quickest with good pay.

LSU went 5-5 in 2020 and fired half the staff.
Notre Dame in 2020 went to the CFP playoffs.

Brian Kelly’s seat...ice cold.
Ed Orgeron’s seat...a little uncertain

Oh yeah, Brian Kelly is 2-0 vs LSU, including 1-0 vs Orgeron
