Checking out Scelfo, see good things.
La man, coached at Tulane and Tech.
Also coached a various La and TX HS.
Could have good recruiting contacts.

Back to the thread at hand (stop bitching ladies)
Scelfo is pretty promising, in my opinion. Foles looked pretty good this year and last and I don't know how highly regarded he was coming into college.
As someone said, he has good contacts in Texas so that should help us on that front.

Scelfo recruited Mettenberger at Arizona and they reportedly have a very good relationship.
Scelfo is very respected in Louisiana. I like this hire, if true.

Correct.
What gives me pause is the BG promotion to OC but they have had an entire year to familiarize with each others expectations and preferences. There ahould be no surprises and if it does not work, there is no real excuse.

Hell BG's first play call will be an entire surprise, we have no proof he has ever called a play.

BG positives:
provides some level of continuity (at least with terminology, etc.);
familiar with the players;
a young up-and-comer eager to prove himself and earn a shot at a head job (i.e. Mullen, Jr.);
I like his fire and intensity and I'd bet it plays well with young recruits.
BG negatives:
he played for Urban Meyer. he spent his entire coaching career (except for last year) under Urban Meyer. is there anything about the skill sets of JJ, ZM or SR that even resemble anything that Alex Smith, Tim Tebow or Cam Newton do?;
though it was only 1 yr, our WRs didn't improve much under his coaching from a hands, blocking or route-running perspective.
I thought this was a move to get the OC and HC on the same page, a move towards a more pro-style offense. I don't dislike the UM spread option attack but where does that get us from a "talent-fit" standpoint or a "cohesive philosophy throughout the staff" standpoint?
OTOH, if he is willing to blend the things Miles wants to do, the things our talent is capable of doing and the things he's learned his entire playing/coaching career into something that is "his own" I think he could be a slam dunk promotion.
Scelfo has an extensive pedigree of QB development. I think he put more Tulane QBs in the NFL than LSU did during the same time period.

I firmly believe Gonzales was brought in to be the OC in a couple of years. So I think some of this discussion and game-planning has likely been going on between Miles and Gonzales.
Belowpar said Miles interviewed OC candidates last year and nothing changed (perhaps because of administration and/or not finding the right person, whatever).
So he brings in Gonzales, knowing that Crowton's contract is over after next season. But he encourages and helps him get the Maryland job a year early. Now he can give Gonzales what Meyer couldn't, the OC position. And I believe they have likely been scheming offensive plans up to this point.
I also suspect that getting Crowton out of here was part of the discussion with the administration; by all reports, Miles wanted more power.
Again, this may all be silly, or it means that Miles is way more clever than anyone is willing to give him credit for. Either way, I've suspected Gonzales would be OC whenever Crowton left, if BG was still here at that time.
I also suspect, he could test the NFL waters to see about OC and/or QB coach so we may not hear anything until after the NFL season. We don't need a named OC to finish this class up so it's feasible we'll be starved for information until after the play-offs. Or maybe we'll hear tomorrow, who knows.
P.S. I like the QB coach hire if it is Scelfo.

So what is the deal with Gonzo. Do we know what type of offense he will run?

If Gonzales is promoted to OC, it likely means next years offense will be the Les Miles offense.

Must have been a tough off-season for you Max. How are you coping?

Is it your position that any number of injuries or young players completely excuses a DC from having a bunch of mediocre to shitty defenses and coming to Baton Rouge and putting on a purple hat will magically transfrom him into a great DC who actually tries to stop the oppositioin on 3rd and long?
A certain poster's assessment of the Chavis hire. Hopefully Miles hires a big name OC. That way, said poster can bash him for not hiring the best OC.

Chavis' gameplan against Auburn was the stuff that 3rd place in the SEC West trophies are made of!!

Gonzo will be nothing more than a puppet for Miles.
Miles has absolutely nothing to lose. A 7 yr contract and he'll be untouchable till year 5.
