We have? Pat Dye? Terry Bowden coached an 11-0 team. Tuberville was a very good coach until Saban arrived. And while he left things a mess, Chizik still won the SEC and the NC. Gus also won the SEC and never had a losing season.
The common thread with all of those coaches was a strong start and a whimper of a finish.

Here is the problem with the logic in the OP: A broke athletic department is going to fire an avg coach in Gus, who has had some good years, with plans to hire a failed coach HC in Steele, who has never been good as a HC, but they are hiring Steele to save money due to Gus' buyout instead of just keeping them both.
