Just wondering what other schools' experiences have been with coaching hires in that the person at the top of the short list may not have been the best hire.

Some examples (and someone please correct if I'm mistaken):

a) Wasn't RichRod Bama's first choice, not Nick?
b) I don't think Saban was our first choice in '00 either.
c) Also, I think Petrino was considered ahead of Les.
d) I think Curley Hallman (probably the worst coach in LSU history) was our first choice after '90.

Any other examples of this sort come to mind?

Considered a failure hire by the AD at the time.

People laughed at Auburn when they hired Chizik.

Nick Saban was the first choice for Alabama in 2007. However, we wanted a coach in early December so they went with Rich Rodriquez. When that hire was botched, Mal Moore's job was on the line. He had to land Nick Saban.

Well, it depends on how you look at it. He had the best and worst seasons in AU history.

Think Fedora may have been ahead of Freeze on our search committee's list. When he took the UNC job, we went to Freeze.

Dam glad this happened.

Why couldn't you get him to quit his NFL gig?

It isn't hard for destination school's to get a coach to do it.

We've had two coaches quit NFL teams in December for the job.

Nick Saban isn't exactly the type of personality to leave a season unfinished. He wasn't going to talk to us until after the Dolphins' seasons was done. Yes, the rumors were present as early as November 2006, but he wasn't leaving a season unfinished.

And congrats on getting Lou Holtz and Bobby Petrino to leave jobs they regretted taking.

Butch Davis is who Emmert wanted but he was ready to go to the NFL

Bertman saw right through Petrino's bullshite, best decision Skip may have ever made in his career

Butch Davis didn't take the LSU job in December 1999 because of the insane team he had coming back in 2000 at Miami. Otherwise, he might have taken that job. He sniffed at Alabama in 2001, but he was intent on taking a NFL job.
