He also acted like a little bitch when Les beat him down.

you want a criminal as a football coach- he had his girlfriend on the payroll -

LINK ]The Bobby Petrino controversy timeline: A decade of shenanigans
quote:
Favorite Petrino story: He was Jaguars' OC in 2001 when I covered them. Sneaked away to Auburn after season without telling Coughlin. (1/2) — Bart Hubbuch (@HubbuchNYP) January 8, 2014
quote:
Coughlin wasn't aware Petrino had left until Auburn announced his hiring. Coughlin was furious, supposedly never spoke to him again. (2/2) — Bart Hubbuch (@HubbuchNYP) January 8, 2014
Classy. I'm sure that's who we want to represent LSU.
LINK
quote:
In 2003, his first year as a head coach at the University of Louisville, Petrino went behind the back of his employer and his onetime boss, Tuberville, to negotiate a deal replacing him at Auburn. He held a clandestine meeting across the Ohio River from Louisville in southern Indiana with Auburn officials, two days before both the Tigers and Cardinals played their final regular-season games.
quote:
Petrino lied about having any contact with Auburn officials -- until two reporters for The (Louisville) Courier-Journal confronted him with documentation of the private plane that brought the university president and athletic director into Petrino's backyard. I was one of the two reporters. And even when faced with the evidence, Petrino resisted telling the truth until Auburn issued a statement owning up to the whole affair.
Character continues to shine on through. And it'll get even better.
quote:
In 2004, Petrino interviewed for the Notre Dame job and had discussions with Florida and Mississippi about their jobs. Then, on Dec. 7, he pledged his loyalty to Louisville.
quote:
As I've stated before, Louisville is the perfect place to raise a family and I plan for all four of my children to graduate from high school in Louisville."
quote:
On Dec. 21, Petrino signed an enhanced contract to stay with the Cardinals.
quote:
On Dec. 26 -- well before the Petrino children had graduated from high school -- he interviewed with LSU to replace Saban.
Amazing loyalty there. And his kids must be smart to graduate from high school so quickly.
quote:
In 2005, Petrino interviewed with the Oakland Raiders. That's after telling people for years that he had no interest in coaching the pros -
quote:
On July 13, 2006, Petrino signed a 10-year contract worth up to $25 million -- a staggering deal for a school of Louisville's modest football heritage and fan base. The day he signed it, Petrino vowed again that Louisville was home. He made a point of insisting that a $1 million buyout provision be put into the contract,
quote:
Five months later, he was gone to Atlanta.
That's just a short timeline of Petrino's career and incredibly shady ways.

Really it's just the motorcycle incident with the mistress. You subtract that and people would have no case.

Thanks for posting that article.
Honestly, though, nothing about his dealings behind closed doors regarding job moves, or his lack of honesty when questioned about them, bother me. And it really shouldn't bother anyone.
The LSU administration dealt behind closed doors with coaches last year behind the back of their current coach, and any coach they were dealing with was doing it behind the backs of their employer, yet most on this board applauded the attempt. We are doing that right now and this board is hoping and guessing at who our administration is dealing with, any of which are currently employed and supposed to be focusing on their current players.
How is that any different than any of the allegations regarding Petrino? That is simply how these things have to be done. Of course coaches say they are happy where they are and aren't interested in any other jobs. But does that mean Herman or Jimbo are sleazy or classless if they are in fact open to listening to LSU right now? Of course not.
Petrino repeatedly found himself in a situation where he was in extremely high demand due to the stellar record of his offensive system, and happened to be in jobs that had clear paths upward at other schools. I don't believe that would be the case in he was the head coach at a school like LSU. I think he would be happy and satisfied and wouldn't have reason to listen to other schools. Does anyone blame him for listening to job offers in his previous stops?
Maybe the difference is that Petrino seems to have personally met or talked with schools, whereas now the accepted practice is to have agents or third parties speak for them. But that just wasn't as necessary 10 or 15 years ago when this stuff supposedly happened.
As for leaving Coughlin without telling him, well, if anyone deserves a warm and fuzzy goodbye I'm sure it's that jolly old fellow
. I mean, they obviously didn't get along, and so Petrino said whatever I'm out. Not defending it, it isn't how I would handle a job change, but it certainly doesn't bother me enough to disqualify a highly qualified coach. These coaches are pretty much all ego maniacs. Those type of alphas don't generally abide by the common rules of etiquette when they are cutting ties with another alpha that they didn't get along with.
Unless someone can point to accepted instances of dirty recruiting that resulted in NCAA sanctions or cases of past players citing misconduct of mistreatment then I just don't buy into the he is such a bad guy to be considered. In fact, his players at Louisville and Arkansas speak highly of him and the only players that complained about him are the Falcons players like Harrington that were pissed that he didn't tell them face to face he was leaving. Again, that whole situation was such a disaster after the Vick situation I just don't put a lot of stock into how he handled it. It was clearly a mistake he was anxious to put behind him and left. Again, not how I would have handled it, but nothing that should disqualify him or justify the constant talk about him being a scumbag.
Now, the combination of all these things are certainly worthy of some hesitation, but often these reputations are houses built of cards, and when you really look at all of the so called "controversies", they just aren't all that significant.
The one that is worthy of judgement is the affair and hiring of his mistress. Again, he has paid dearly for that, both personally and professionally. I just happen to think lessons can be learned and the likelihood of something similar happening again are very low.
Honestly, this is one of the reasons I always "hated" him. But really, who gives a shite? He was pissed and guys with egos like that generally take arse whippings badly. Plus, there is the claim that he was upset with the Jefferson superman celebration that he took as some sort of mocking of the Arkansas player that died the week before the game. Believe it or don't, but that is something that he and many of his players and fans thought happened there.
Again, many of us had really bad impressions of O when he was at other stops and in direct competition with LSU. It is all about perspective.
I understand it's unlikely to happen, I just hope our admin is doing their due diligence on all of the qualified candidates, and Petrino is certainly qualified imo.

I up voted you. He's one of the top three coaches in the country in my opinion.
Everyone thinks Bielema is doing well at Arkansas. You have to remember Petrino had Arky as a consistent top 10 team. Took them to a BCS game where they should have beaten OSU. He took a 3 star project QB at UL and he's now the probably heisman winner. He was three yards from being undefeated and beating Clemson at Louisville. He had Louisville on the cusp of a BCS title game with Brohm.
He's never been at a program like LSU.
He's in the same category as Saban, Meyer, Harbaugh. He's the best offensive mind of them all. It's not gimmicky either. He runs a balanced offense.

See this is exactly the way I used to think, and honestly it's just simplistic judgement and pretty uninformed.
quote:
He doesn't have a "history or leaving at the worst time". He didn't leave Louisville badly. He left Atlanta in a not ideal way, but again the entire Atlanta experience was a series of unfortunate events sparked by Vick's unforeseen legal troubles.
He left both Atlanta and Arky in disgraceful ways, period. So yes, he 100% has that history. Furthermore, despite all your Atlanta excuses, nothing excuses this cowardly crap:
quote:
Petrino informed his players of his decision to resign via a four-sentence laminated note left at the locker of each player
quote:
As for leaving Coughlin without telling him, well, if anyone deserves a warm and fuzzy goodbye I'm sure it's that jolly old fellow
Oh, so he has an even longer history of being a coward
quote:
The no morals question is tougher. He had an affair. That is not an opinion. He also unethically used his position to get her a job. Again, not an opinion.
So besides using his position of power at the university to hire his mistress, he doesn't have any other skeletons. K
quote:
These are simply not reasons that such a successful offensive mind should not be given every consideration.
Well except for the ones you've already listed then tried to excuse

Well should really look at it in terms of Petrino's 10 million buyout minus Jimbo's _____ million buyout = ______?

IMO Petrino's exit with Atlanta wasn't as bad as the other stuff. He wanted to meet with the players and called Art Blank about it but Blank said no because he wanted to wait until he got back to Atlanta, and Arkansas needed Petrino to agree to a deal ASAP or we were moving on. Jeff Long gave him an ultimatum.
The thing that killed him with the motorcycle incident was hiring her over presumably more qualified candidates and then lying to Long about it. So many people think he was fired just for the affair when that wasn't the case.
No one who worked in the athletic department really liked him. His first year several freshman players considered transferring because they hated him and how he called them bitches and other names in practice. There were rumors that the players knew about the affairs he would have in hotels during away games all the time. Not sure if that is true though. He is a great football coach but we had so many players get in trouble and we had serious APR issues by the time Bielema took over to the point that we almost faced a bowl ban. If you can handle all of that though then he'll get you results on the field.

man, the guy is of low character. a snake is a snake; they simple do not change. LSU doesn't need a guy like him to coach our team.

He'd be my first choice, but the combo of his a-hole-ness, issue at Arkansas and $10M buy out mean we won't go after him unfortunately. Though it is also possible he wouldn't leave L'Ville anyway after they gave him another shot and extension.

For you. Not for me, and hopefully not for the people in the position of making this critical hire. If that disqualified candidates, they would not consider Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Bill Belichick, or Sean Payton. Not that any of them are interested, but even if they were, you would not be interested, apparently.
quote:

Again, for you. Not for many people that can look at the big picture of what happened in Atlanta. There is even an Arkansas poster that likely followed that situation closer than you or I did that says that Petrino was told not to address the team by the owner after he informed him of his decision.

That's strike ONE on my list. Again, he seems to have done everything possible to make things right with his wife and family, and has had no similar instances before or since that striking lapse in judgement.

According to you, based on vague and largely overblown instances by the media. I would hope our decision makers are being a bit more thorough in their analysis of potential candidates.

Who did you vote for on Tuesday? How did you defend that person from the vicious character attacks from both sides? I'll hang up and listen.
